Rear White Spot Lights - Mini Project

Well I keep getting bugged about symmetry of lights since I fitted the quads and have been on the lookout for a set ot quad white spot, but they seem rarer than hens teeth, or I’d have to pay about £200 for a German pair and sacrifice one of them.

A reminder of how we started:

Dannyboy pointed me to a set of lights on Ebay that were not quite right, as it had an amber lens too, but I got the pair for £10 so worth punt.

Well they arrived this morning and tonight I had a couple of hours so had a go this evening (instead of helping with dinner)

Right side of the new pair:

First thing was to cut off the lens I wanted from the new set and trim it up.

Next a much braver was to cut the red lens off my light. Oh dear if this went wrong – no real lights

With a skill of a brain surgeon using a trowel, I cut off the lenses, trimmed and paired them up to give me one good light with clear lenses.

And with the lens chopped off ready to be trimmed down:

New lens paired up with my light

A bit of heat welding and a bead of silicone, fit the french fry back and the job was done.

I’d sourced a red fog light with silver coating, so that was easy.

Just had to put it back in the car and all tested perfect first time.

:) :) :) ..and the end result - well happy :) :) :) :

Sorry about the poor photos but it’s wet outside….I’ll try harder in the morning.

Cool beans! How much better does that look with the symetrical thing going on! :D

Good work, my effort at chopping a unit up ended in bin! Good work Phil. :)

looks good, nice finishing touch, id guess even if the surgery wasnt perfect the bit of trim would hide it

Cheers guys - glad you like the result.

Should look nice when I get her out in the morning into a hopefully dry and bright day.

Eagle eyed may spot I sprayed up the cans at the weekend to blend them in a little better

I thought the MOT required one lense to be red? Can I get away with just a red light in back coming out of the white lens as a rear fog light?

No it's the colour of the light not the lens - see extracts from testers manual related to colour:

Method of inspection
3. Check that the front and rear position lamps show light of the correct colour

Reason for Rejection
3.
a. A front position lamp shows a light other than white to the front, (or yellow if incorporated in a yellow headlamp)
b. A rear position lamp shows a light other than red to the rear.

6. A mandatory rear fog lamp
a. is missing, does not emit a steady red light or emits a light other than red

Nice !
Next step : hide the boot lock !
Do you think it would be possible to adapt the boot lock mechanism of the coupé to the roadster ?

Ah the relief! The sleepless nights are over! Looks like mine now, only i dont have the twin exhausts DAMMIT! :D

You need some balls to start chopping up lights! good work 8)

You're probably right but as I've been doing things for so long and have a lot of tools then I tend to see the project and pitfalls before the cutter ever hits.
I did chop the spare up before to see what the inners looked like then actually it was pretty straightforward.

Better photo now the rain has stopped for once:
I'm well pleased now I examine it free of rain and in the light and cannot see any eveidence of surgery
