Rear Wheel Scraping

I have a 2003 3.0 Z4 that I bought new. About a year ago I noticed a very light scraping sound coming from the left wheel area. I suspected brakes or rotors, but when I took it to the dealership (still under waranty) they said that there was nothing wrong and the noise came from the tires. It has since gotten worse and it drives me crazy. I hate driving with the window down because all I hear is... scrape, scrape, scrape, scrape :x . Has anyone heard this before? What can I do?

Difficult without hearing it, but from what you say it really does sound like the pads rubbing on the disc, or maybe a warped disc.

Try another dealer or any good garage - I think you were being fobbed off.

Best of luck!

You might want to check that the backplate isn't rubbing on the disc. Another possibility is a stone trapped between the backplate and the disc.

Could the handbrake mechanism have got stuck on one side?

Also go for a spirited drive and then feel the hub of each wheel, if one is warmer at the rear you may have a sticky brake caliper. Do the rear disc look funny on one side or tempered blue? Are the pads wearing evenly to the eye (may be able to see without removing the wheel if you have large spoke gaps).

You could jack the way up and try to turn each rear wheel by hand with the handbrake off and pinpoint the noise. Chock the front wheels carefully if you do this and support the rear using stands and a trolley jack.

check wheels nuts if you havnt already if any are loose scraping can come from the wheel / hub. (although this is normally followed by a tracking issue....)

This has happened to me twice. Makes a horrendous noise. Rock fell out by itself the first time, second time was when I was wiggling things about.

Check the rear handbrake isnt binding on that side, recent renewal and incorrect adjusment of the handbrake at the dealer made the handbrake stick on and it made a nasty squeel and the hubs got rather hot!

I ended up getting the tire replaced and the noise stopped. I don't know if something was put back in place or if it was just the tire to begin with. Thanks for all the good advice!
