rear wheel removal

about to get my wheels refurbished - need to take them off before taking them to be refurbed. However , as always with me , nothing is easy. Got the rear wheels nuts/lugs off ok but the wheel won't budge - am I missing something ? seems like its stuck on - is it just a case of giving it a kick or is there an easier way of freeing it up?

Help !

same thing happened to mine. they need a good kicking from the other side.

once they're off, give the hub a good coating of copper grease to stop it happening again.

Yep, I usually stand with my back to the wheel and use my heel on it alternating from side to side when this happens. Can sometimes be stuck quite tight!!

Keep two bolts in but backed off though just so the wheel doesn't fall off and do some damage.

As suggested jack up the car I would consider using an axel stand then kick the tyre hard at the top then the bottom then left side at 9 o'clock then 3 o'clock. You are trying the heat seal the alloy has formed to the hub. Copper grease when off helps prevent. Best of luck but it does take a lot of force.

Nope ...
Unless you ex-soccer heros still have the power behind yer foot !

Best way ..
Take a wheel you got off to the stuck rim. ...
Swing that baby (tire - not a real baby ..That would be wrong)
And use that to swing near the bottom of the tire.
One or two hits ought to work ...
No damage done to rims and all your muscles / bones are left intact.

Now if the rim is still fused ...
The worst case scenarion ...
Loosed the lug bolts ..
And drive up and down your driveway !
Things should pop !

Bumpy

+1 on the copper grease or anti seize

The good news is that despite being welded in place last year mine came straight off this time because of the copper grease

Whichever method you use keep the wheel lugs on, loosened just by a couple of turns. If your kicking under the car it may just save your life... At a minimum it'll save the face of the wheel or other damage..

If you decide to use grease for the future don't put it on the lug threads asit alters the torque and they can self loosen.

Do as srhutch says sit on the drive with your feet against each side of the wheel and tyre then stamp on the tyre with the base of your foot... alternate sides until the wheel loosens off its boss
Copper slip or white grease before replacement . Easiest way and doesn't damage the wheels or your back! + you are not under the car

The good news is I'm still alive ! - jacked car up using a hydraulic wheeled jack using the proper jack point mounting ( nervous about using any other point ) placed my wife's Fiesta spare tyre underneath the zed to protect me in case - gave the offending wheel tyre a couple of sharp kicks and hey presto it loosened it enough to pull it off with a couple of tugs.

Will it harm the zed to leave it like it is for a day or two whilst the wheel is done ? I've jammed the fiesta spare under the wheel hub in the event the hydraulic jack creeps down ? ( unlikely as it's a newish jack )

No it will be fine like that. There shouldn't be a problem. Invest in some axle stands, they are handy things to have and make things a whole lot safer. :)

Just watch out this if the jack goes down, that the backplate is not damaged as this is wider in diameter than the disk.

Like he said ................ but remembering to jack it before you start kicking the hell out of the rim

I was waiting for some one to make the comment and I was not disappointed!
That's why the wheel wouldn't come off + the six wheel studs of course

Usual paranoia has set in - I've put the wheel back on with two lugs and let the jack down - will nip over to a local breakers tomorrow and pick up an old 5 stud BMW wheel I can put on whilst I take one wheel off at a time to get refurbed - my zed can stay in my garage in the meantime. Three of the wheels really need a going over - the fourth is a new rim anyway ( due to original getting cracked ) - hopefully won't look too different to the refurbed ones as those will not have the diamond finish on the outer rim - if it is noticeable I'll have to get the newer rim painted to match.
