Rear tyre puncture after 100 miles

I should have taken out tyre insurance last week. I went to work this morning, and warning light came up. I thought it sometimes happen to new tyres. I checked the tyres when I was in the car park. I found a big bolt on the rear tyre.

Ouch, I did take the insurance out with BM at a cost of £170 because the same thing happened to me with my last Z, 250 miles and a puncture=new tyre

That is so typical, and you won't have a flat tyre now for the next 10 years or so, especially if you were to take insurance out now.

uh ... do you like your alloys?

I only get tyres done at the BMW garage after I take a picture of the wheel, any damage = dealer sorts it out. It is not more expensive the KF either.

I took out insurance when I got mine, 1 week later - puncture in new rear tyre.

Nothing since mind.

I did not take out the insurance last week when it was collected, because it did not happen to me for 16 years' motoring. :(

My local dealer looked at the tyre and checked for any structural damage, and it was repaired and not replaced (£25). Result! They said only puncture on Bridgestone tyre can be repaired (depend on damage/location), puncture on other brands, i.e. Michelin, Continental, cannot be repaired. Is it correct?

I still better check the tyre pressure for several days to make sure no pressure loss. Where should I get the best tyre insurance? Many insurance policies only pay out first £250 per tyre (5 tyres in 3 years). Any advices?

RAC tyre insurance is £50, but you'll need to call them - 08707 559 666.

No BMW dealer should repair a Bridgstone/any run-flat because the structural integrity is compromised when punctured (and BM are very strict on that) also if you are driving with a repaired tyre and are involved in an accident that could be a get out for you're insurance provider

Kryton - is there an official line on that one? Would like to know how they would / could do that unless the manufacturer states that somewhere?

When I bought my last Z I had a puncture at 250 miles (rear) and then at circa 1000 miles (front) at the time I rang 4 dealerships and I was informed that BMW would not let them repair the tyre, I was informed when I bought my iS that nothing has changed re run-flat repair's

I would have thought that if I had a negative response from 4 dealers then it should be the same throughout the dealer network? :)

My local dealer was very honest in this case. They could have sold me a new tyre and made more profit. Instead they inspected the tyre and confirmed it was safe to repair.

>> is there an official line

Well, this isn't from BMW or Bridgestone, but is quite informative and quotes some 'official' info from Michelin on the topic:

Is it possible to repair a Run-Flat tire that has been punctured?

It depends on how far and at what speed the car was driven after the puncture was sustained. Repair is possible only if deemed so by the tire sales store.
Preconditions include a puncture of less than 6mm for both side-reinforced type and support-ring type Run-Flat tires, plus minimal damage to the support ring in case of the latter.
However, it is strongly recommended that the tire is replaced as its durability will have been weakened after being repaired.

I got a puncture 4 months ago on holiday in Corfu (Greek Island). BMW told me that
- they never repair the bridgestone tyres
- I was 250km from the nearest official BMW dealer, so therefore I needed a tow
- my tyre was incredibly rare and would take 5 days at the very least to ship from Germany

After this truly enlightening conversation I realised that actually I needed Bridgestone, not BMW. With a wonderfully helpful hotel owner in charge I got a new one couriered to the island for next day fitting, brilliant!

Just for reference, mine was not repairable; I had to drive around 50km on it to get back to my hotel base. I could tell from the noise and handling in the last 15 km or so, that this one was not going to work.
