Rear suspension refresh

Hi all, I’m hoping someone may be able to advise on a rear suspension refresh. I replaced most of the front suspension early last year, however my MOT is approaching, and deterioration of rear trailing arm bushes was picked up as an advisory last time. I figure that whilst replacing those I may as well refresh some other parts – if the price is not too prohibitive. Grateful If anyone can offer any advice.

The arms are a PITA on one side to replace as you need to shift the diff. It's worth upgrading the lower bushing to the same as the upper while you're there on the wheel hub. They pop out easy with a decent bushing kit, but will only go in one way.

Thanks mate. I'm pretty hopeless when it comes to mechanics so won't be doing it myself :)

On the diagram below (linked), I was going to replace #3. Any chance you can point out which one you're referring to?

Cheers.

Do that, they are good, though many will say use OE with limiters.

I refer to numbers 2 and 3 in that diagram, bushing 2 (ball joint) can be used in both locations, just as on the M as an upgrade, worth doing. I personally wouldn't poly those unless tracking the car.

I very recently had fitted some Powerflex RTABs with limiters. The car noticeably turns-in better and hopefully they also reduce some rear wheel steer at higher loads

Steve, many thanks for this. One more quick question, is the below link to the correct part? I've found the ball joint on various Euro websites but the delivery time is too long (cars in next wk). These are on Eurocarparts but they don't have the OE part number listed:

https://www.eurocarparts.com/p/lemforder-control-arm-wishbone-bush-610110905?type=shopping&gclid=CjwKCAiA8bqOBhANEiwA-sIlN20teKz49la_ROwvbWvlP0E34S4ILzrWCF_2Tm4RV10pn8TuteW9aRoChK8QAvD_BwE

Hello,

With reference to your rear suspension refresh, if you take the OE part number from realem, google MEYLE online catalogue, put the number into the ‘parts look up box’ on the left it will give you the MEYLE part number, Once you have the MEYLE number put this into eBay and it will give you a list of suppliers of the parts you require, looks like BMW Motormec may be your cheapest option.

Lemforder are the original OE assembly line fit bush, however the MEYLE bush is a very worthy replacement.

Use the MEYLE site for reference, eg PD high carbon discs, PD Heavy metal free performance brake pads, HD suspension etc.

Hope this helps

That's why forums are so great. Parts ordered, cheers John, much appreciated.

Sorry have been away! As long as you matched the upper PN then you should have 4x to install, much better than the stock lower bush, mine were awful when I got them out. I think I had Lemforder ball joints but they're all OEMs so the quality will be good.

More often than not the exact same parts without the BMW stamp and 100% mark up.

Hi Scooba_Steve,

Your assumption is correct regarding Lemforder,

In many cases Lemforder is the OE bush and also steering component, the manufacturers logo's are trademarks and the parts are not allowed to be sold under the Lemforder brand with the logo still visible, unless a royalty agreement had been agreed at the time of manufacturer, I am only aware of a some Ford references where this agreement was in place and some Porsche references that were later withdrawn.

To identify if a Lemforder part is the exact OE part the Lemforder part number ends ***** - 01

eg if the part number is 22334-01 this is an OE assembly line fit part, if the part number is 22334-02 or 03 or 04 or 05 etc these are parts manufactured to the same OE spec but it is not the OE assembly line fit part...........

I intend to refresh my rear suspension once I have sorted my Z3, have you changed the upper (ball joint) and lower bushes on the trailing arm as the outside diameter is supposed to be 1mm difference, the lower having the wider diameter.

Many Thanks

John

I replaced the lower bushing 33326771828 with the upper ball joint 33306852895. The M has this configuration and it fit fine on my 3.0si, though there is a slight taper so they can only be extracted and inserted from one direction.
I didn't replace the uppers because they were in a much better condition but will probably do so this year when it warms up.

The ball joint is a much more meaty part! Well worth the upgrade I think, especially as it allows flex in what appeared to be the direction the old ones were worn in.
