Rear Springs

I have seen a few things about rear springs snapping and was wondering if this is a problem that needs to be fixed when it happens, or fixed before it happens?

I guess what I'm asking is, is it dangerous and likely to make you crash or is it just something that needs replacing when it does go?

Also if you don't want your car lowered is it best to stick with OEM springs? or can you get better quality ones that are the same ride height?

You may not even notice when a spring goes... My z went in for its mot last week and they found a broken rear spring.. :(, not sure how long I have been driving with it...

I guess if you replaced it as a preventative measure, where do you stop? do you replace every moving part just in case?!

Cheers for the info, I will maybe just check them now and again for peace of mind
 
Although my car (at the time) was still in warranty, I used the rear spring issue as a reason to upgrade to a set of KW coilovers. Best move I made I'd say. :D
 
I would personally change them as a preventative measure. It is a well known and common fault with most bmw models of that era.

You can get the Suplex rear springs, but I don't know whether they'd eventually snap or not.

I went for eibachs. The drop isn't huge and the ride is the same (or even better than standard, some say)

Wheres best on price for a set of Eibachs then? Just so I can plan to do it in the future. Buying the Z4, 6 months after buying my merc has pretty much cleared me out, I need to stop myself 'browsing' other cars on the net, it was only a matter of time before something as sexy as the Z4 caught my attention!

I've had a look on M-Style where they are £193, wonder if its worth the extra to know where they are coming from if you get me,
unless I've just been watching too much "Don't get done, get Dom" ?!
