Rear Springs

Apologies if you think this is a lame question and yes i could probably google it :poke: But :!: Is it obvious if the springs or spring break? What i mean is, would their be a significant list in the cars stance? Its just something that i am aware lots of people have suffered from and want to know what the tell tale signs are  :tumbleweed:
ta.

Hey Rusky, when my rear right went the car dropped around an inch. Also, I could hear a cluttering noise, but this was purely because the broken bit got intertwined with the remainder of the suspension. It isn't easy to tell visually otherwise though (as far as I know) without removing the wheel, so I'd just look for an obvious difference in ride height.

Mine dropped massively and wasn't driveable. Even if less severe if you point your camera phone through the alloy at the spring base you can check if it is in tact, otherwise just take the wheel off.

Didn't even notice it on my Roadster.

My drivers side has been broken for a few months, I went to get that replaced and on the way home the other side went. :headbang:

I heard that as the bottom half of the spring went shooting across the road.

+1 my near side rear went I couldn't even tell !! only found out when BMW told me when it had gone in for something else under warranty I suppose it all depends where is breaks

si-forks is now tapa chatting in HD

In most cases it's the top end of 1 to 3" that snaps off. Most owners never feel or see it, aside sometimes hearing a twang as it snaps or clatter as the bit drops out.

Most find out at MOT time when failing :(

My rear one went at the bottom, so it was visible through the spokes of my rear wheels.

Glad to see a post on this, sorry but I want to hijack it a bit as I have been thinking my car has rear springs issues. I've only had it a few months and don't get to drive her much but i've noticed over bumps it's very hard and there is a bit of a noise going on behind my ear (i'm not sure if I'm making it up thinking of the springs or it really is there).

I took Tom's advice and stuck the camera phone through the spokes on my wheel and got a couple of pictures:

The passenger side, which I think might still be ok:

The drivers side I think isn't quite right:

To add to my concerns I can just about get my hand sideways under the rear passengers wheel, but only 4 fingers on the drivers side, so something is wrong.

FYI the disks look so bad because the car had a clean today and hasn't been out since.

If it makes any difference my car is an E85 on standard suspension, so any thoughts and opinions welcome please!

I have to say that it is the drivers side that sits slightly lower too, that's why I asked the question :| might get mine checked. :|

try and look a bit closer at the base of the spring also as well as the top section ...

I wonder how many more people have the same thing? I was starting to worry that I was a little heavier than I thought I was...

Anyone have a clue as to why or if it's normal?

I figured out one of mine was broken as the handling wasn't quite 100%. Barely noticeable, but something didn't quite feel right.

When washing the car, had a closer look and saw the spring had snapped

Hum, haven't had mine for long enough to know what normal feels like... Feels fine and responsive though. Also after more careful listening I think the noise behind me is the roof shelf.
