Rear Springs - which ones?

One of my rear springs has snapped so will be replacing both. Have had a quote from Sopers BMW, with the Forum discount each Spring is about £72. They recommend changing the pads too which are another £7, so all together about £80 from BMW.

There are a few on EuroCarParts (naturally cheaper) but not sure if they are any good:

The ones I put on my old Z4 were from ruderacing.co.uk comes up zensport now.

Thanks Russ59, but I cant seem to find any parts for a Z4 on that site. Whenever you choose a product or category and then choose BMW, they never offer the Z4 variant?

Stuart, thanks for the info. I'm happy to put Eibach but I was under the impression that all the Eibach ones were lower, and I don't want to lower the car any more than it already is?
 
Eibachs are lower.
click on performance parts then suspension then lowering springs and so on, Z4 last one on list.

Don't go for those springs if your car has M Sport Suspension. Too many people have purchased from Euro CarParts have made that mistake. Suplex UK based in Sheffield do a wide range of replacement springs. Contact them and quote your VIN number. Should be able to get a pair for around £120 including postage.

I'm selling my springs... They are in excellent condition. Non Sport version, came off a 2.2Litre 2004 SE.

Eibach Pro are lower - I think what Stuart meant was that the OEM springs are actually manufactured for BMW by Eibach.
 
Thanks for the offer bradmarsh1989, but if I am going to replace them I'd prefer to just put new ones on and potentially have longer life out of them.

Bing, that's what I thought. Yeah like I said I don't want any lower as the ride is hard/bumpy enough and I'm worried if I go any lower it will be worse (or have I got it wrong and it might be better!?) The other thing I'm concerned about is the ground clearance, it's already quite tricky and I'm afraid that any lower is going to be a bit of a nightmare to live with........
 
I've recently put eibach pro springs on after a broken spring, so kind of forced into it really as I couldn't be bothered with the risk of it breaking again.

The ride to me feels miles better but maybe that's because mine before were so knackered for longer than I realised. The drop is 1cm lower than standard sport springs. It has stopped me getting onto the work drive etc which to be fair damages a c class estate and a 3 series so pretty extreme anyway. Otherwise I haven't hit anything yet, and never could get up a kerb etc standard anyway ....

I presume that if you go for the Eibach springs you need to change all 4?

Also, how do I know if I have sports springs or just "normal" ones on at the moment?
 
Sports springs will have blue dabs of paint on them, non might have green but I could be making the last not up. Ideally as the spring stiffness is different then all 4.

Just to close the loop here, I decided to order the Springs from BMW as I didn't want any lower springs, and did a lot of reading up about different size springs and the potential knock on effect it could have on the vehicle and other parts. Maybe it was a good idea, maybe bad, but I'm happy with the result and I have to say the Service from Sopers BMW was fantastic.

Luckily I ordered two for the rear as I thought it was good practice to replace both (even if only one was broken). When we got the car up and took a look, both rear springs were broken and one of them was broken at the top and bottom!

Glad to say, we replaced both rear Springs (bit of a squeeze to get them in) and both front droplinks and all the noises have gone and the handling does feel stiffer and better. :thumbsup:

The scary thing is that I took this car to two different "BMW Specialists" - the first one drove it (did not put it up on ramp) and told me the control arm bushes needed doing (mentioned nothing about springs or drop-links). The second one put it up on the ramp and told me one rear spring was broken and one drop-link. After getting the car up, the bushes are fine and dont need replacing and like I said both rear springs were broken (the one that he didn't detect was broken at top and bottom)!

Makes you wonder about the skills of these "Specialists", and all I can say is that I feel much safer having done it myself and knowing that I replaced them with decent parts..... 8)

I've been looking at sticking some EIbachs on and I remember seeing elsewhere that they can cause aggravated failures elsewhere (can't remember the exact issues), but I have never seen a post on here (in my long 6 month membership :wink: ) talking of Eibachs causing failures.

The biggest issue is informing your insurance company and seeing what happens to your premium.
 
If you change the springs to Eibach or similar that lower the car then you should get a 4 wheel alignment done. I can imagine that if you don't then the tyres will wear strangely and the handling will not feel right. Not sure if this would also put different / sub-optimal directional stresses on other suspension components as well :?

To be honest, after having mine done and seeing how far out the alignment was to start with, unless I see evidence an alignment has recently been done I will look to do it as a matter of course on any car new to me in the future. Pot holes and kerbings over a period of time are bound to knock everything out slightly.

Here's a question - if you own a car over, say, 4 years, how often would you have an alignment done as an ongoing maintenance task, if at all ?

I read several discussions on the topic but I am quite sure the most convincing one was actually on this forum (as one would expect :D ), just search for "springs" and trawl through those (I'll post the link if I find it again).
 
just replaced mine with Supplex ones after reading up on here the good reviews, really recommend them very helpful and good product and I think I paid less then £100 for both

having a cup of tea with the lads on the warehouse floor and I asked the guy what it was like working there (surrounded by literally hundreds of thousands of springs) he stated "after a while you even dream about bl00dy springs"
