Rear speakers question

Hi, basic 6 speaker/Business head unit question on a 2006 facelift Zed - I'm guessing one of the previous owners liked their music LOUD as the speaker behind the drivers head doesn't work at all & the one on the passengers side seems a bit scratchy & distorted to me.

I understand getting the rear speakers out is a pig of a job so before I even attempt this I thought I'd try & prove whether this is a speaker or head unit issue by popping the head unit out & testing from there.

Before I start I have a few questions though:-

--Does anyone have a wiring diagram so that I can remove the plug from the back of the radio & identify the speaker wires so that I can test for 8 ohms?
--Are channels from the head unit known to 'go' rather than an actual speaker fault?
--Can I get replacement aftermarket better quality speakers or are they a bespoke size & hence OEM?
--Should I disconnect the car's battery or can I just remove the radio's fuse?
--Do the seats have to come out to get the trim off before accessing the rear speakers?
--Is it possible to get to the back of the rear speakers from the boot area to check for a wire off or at least test from there?
& lastly...
--Should I just wind the fader to the fronts & forget about this

Thanks in advance

Tony

1) Sorry, don't have a diagram.
2) Don't know
3) They're normal sized speakers though you may need adapters to make the speakers fit (I needed to make some out of wood when I fitted my woofers in the kicks)
4) Disconnecting the battery is a matter of debating what you are going to do.
5) Seats don't have to come out though it might make things a little easier.
6) Yes it's possible, remove the rear panel and you'll see wires running up to the speaker themselves. If you're going to cut them, make sure you cut one wire at a time and terminate the bare ends appropriately. Though probably not the smartest choice.
7) This is a possibility. I personally have settled on the fact that rear fill ruins the sound stage and as a result am not running rear speakers at all now.

Thanks Neil,

Re No6 - so it's not the back of the rear speakers you see from the boot, just the wires leading to them - is that right?

This does mess with my OCD-ness though, if they had never been fitted then this wouldn't bother me, however as they are there I'd like to know they to work, even if if the fader was 100% to the fronts - does that make any sense at all....

Here's the head unit pin outs:

You don't need to worry about disconnecting the battery or fuse as long as the ignition is off if you are just pulling the connectors off. Just be sure you are only probing speaker wires.

Thanks for this info 'bcworkz', very useful & something I'm intending to look at over Christmas
