Rear speaker size

Hi guys. Does anyone know what size the speakers are in the rear behind the seats?? I was looking at trying to replace them with something a little more chunky. But don't want to go to the hasttle of removing them without having a replacement handy.
Also how easy are they to remove ?
I have the standard audio system.. And am obviously looking to improve things slightly...

You will see a typical BMW 3 screws mounting system. The front plate can easily be removed, even without tools (if you have long fingernails). I don't think there is enough space to mount more 'chunky' ones.

The weak output level of the rear speakers can be blamed on the headunit because the rear signal is filtered.

Yeah.. I don't understand why the rears are filtered...?
Anyone out there know any way to make this a full range audio signal?
Seams crazy to only have there with 'high' end coming out of them..

In reality the car has two speakers, the ones in the back I pretty useless because of the filter, so invest in a good pair of fronts as they are probably doing all the work, my mod for next year.
 
I'd guess the rear is filtered due to the seating position. They likely figure too much range in that position would mess up the sound from elsewhere. Its a similar principle to those home surround hifi kits. Rears are filtered as they're closer to you and just need to fill the audio space, not blast off your head, that's what the fronts are for.
 
I'd hardly describe the audio system as Blasting my head off..
I'm a sound engineer by trade... And filtering those speakers makes no sence at all.. And the filtering is so bad they sound terrible...
 
I have also the standard system, so without tweeter in the doors. By replacing the head unit with a decent DIN head unit and two good full range 3" speakers in the rear (Cuttof 100 Hz), the sound is seriously improved. First I was scared the seats would mute or absorb the sound, but this is not the case. As long the rear windows are closed, the sound is good. I'm still using the standard front speaker, (-3Db) to fill up 'the cabin'.

Edp what head unit did you use and how is the interface with the steering controls, aux in etc.

I am just looking at front speakers at the moment, probably Pioneer TS-E1002i as they give a good frequency spread of 40 Hz to 40 Khz, does anyone know what the power output of the standard business head unit is?

Have to do something with the sound before the spring, cannot live with the sound the way it is.
 
Hey are you sure they are 40-40khz ?
You can't physically hear that high. And seriously doubt you can produce lows at 40hz in a car... That would take some enormous amps... Not to mention speakers....

However the sensitivity isn't that great with these speakers, decisions....

One question, how easy is it to get the door panels off? found this link and it seems like a bit of an adventure :wink:

Yeah it migh say that.. And they might be actually able to measure it.. But you will A. Never hear that high.. And B. Never be able to reproduce that low..
In a car under normal circumstances. You can probably reproduce 80 -60 hz and most people won't hear above 20khz realistically in a car you will reproduce something around 18khz..

Wish you could indulged those rears though.. And slot in some tweeters into those door pillars

hi thanks for the post... anyone got more ideas for improving the sound of the basic e89 system.. with the bmw headunit ? loce to know if you can change the highpass filter settings for the rear... and or fit the tweeters ?
