Rear shock top mounts de-bonded??

My car was in the garage on Monday and I've only just read a couple of advisories on the invoice, which they didn't point out at the time. One of these is "Both rear shock top mounts de-bonded".

I've had a quick look at mine and nothing seems obviously wrong, but I haven't jacked it up.

So, would this mean that item 8 or item 4 is knackered?

Been doing a bit of looking up parts and I understand item 4 is just a bumpstop. So they must mean item 8 needs replacing.
I've now jacked up the rear and it seems fine to me.

What am I missing? How can they tell these are "de-bonded" from only looking here? They've not removed any carpets/insulation inside to access to the top of the mounts.
 
I had a look at this today after receiving a pair of Meyle HD mounts. Turns out, there's nothing wrong with the mounts. But the shocks are knackered - they don't rise at all. So I've ordered a pair of Bilstein B6 shocks.
Makes me wonder why the garage would say the mounts have de-bonded when clearly they couldn't see them and wouldn't have gone to the trouble of trying to access them under the roof trim and insulation etc. The shocks are clearly the originals (13 years old).
 
Sure they didn't mean the bump stops? Mine no longer sat at the top of the shock and were an advisory. They only fit by interference on the tube.
 
Their comment on the invoice was "Both rear shock top mounts de-bonded". However, my bump stops are pretty perished and no longer grip in the top of the protection tube.
I've read somewhere that the Bilstein B6 shocks have their own internal bump stops. Can anyone confirm this? Can I therefore get away without replacing the OEM bumpstops too?

I took one rear shock off, pushed down - it sank with little force needed and then didn't rise at all. Then put it on the kitchen table where it very slowly rose about 1mm at a time over the next 20 mins or so.
So I assumed they were knackered. They are the originals, so nearly 14 years old now.
I've just ordered new Bilstein B6 ones.
 
I swapped all mine out, they were tired and the new ones a massive improvement. I don't think the rear shocks have internal stops, so replaced with new OE ones at the same time.
 
I cannot find anyone selling the bump stops for the M-sport suspension - item 33536761903. The standard bump stops are available.

They're not supposed to rise, unless they are self levelling. The easiest way to test for a dud damper, is to clamp one end in a vice, and then see if you can push and pull the other . If it's really easy to do, then it's past it's best, if there is a good amount of resistance, they are probably ok.

In that case, mine are shot or at least very tired, as I could push/pull it. Still, after 14 years and 113,000 miles you'd expect them to be needing replacement.

My new Bilstein B8 rear shocks turned up today. I did originally order B6 shocks, but the seller reiterated the standard Bilstein message that the B8 is for the M-sport suspension. Anyway, I gave in and went for the B8's.

Here's the B8 shock (item 24-104937) against the original BMW M-Sport shock.
The Bilstein is 27mm shorter. I do now wonder if the B6 is actually the better option to match the OEM shock, which is something others have said.

Anyway, all fitted and the ride is sooo much better.

I also fitted new Meyle HD top mounts. But as suspected, there was absolutely nothing wrong with the originals, so I suspect the garage where trying to pull the wool over my eyes.
