Rear shelf queery

Can someone please explain how the rear shelf works on my z4 and what the point of the knobs are as I don't see any point of it unless I'm missing something.

It's to give you extra space in the boot should you need to put something slightly larger in than when it's in the down position that doesn't fit but can squeeze in.

It's also there likely to protect the soft top when it is in the down position. to stop anything from inside the boot snagging on it or getting stuck in it.

The roof won't go down with the shelf in its top (up) position so make sure you have it down when putting the roof down.

it's not a shelf I don't think as in I don't recommend you putting stuff on it. it's possible a shelf for the soft top when it's down but I wouldn't stick anything on it.
