Rear pads - Few Questions

Hi all,

I've had a search about this topic but not totally clear and also like to know a few other things.

I have an '09 zed and the idrive is telling me I need some more rear pads. I have the filling questions.

1. How do I know if I need new discs also? They look ok, but not sure. In the past I have always just replaced both.

2. People have mentioned this has to be done by a dealer or someone with the correct tools to realise the electronic handbrake. Is this a tool, or do they plug it into a system to release it?

3. If done by an independent dealer, will they be able to reset all the idrive stuff?

4. Does anyone know what make the pads are that BMW use? I'm not bothered about upgrading, as I am pretty happy with the current setup.

5. Last of all, is there a sensor on both sides, or just the one, and do I definitely need a new one??

Many thanks in advance.

1, you shouldn't need to change the discs after one set of rear pads.

2, I was going to do them myself but ended up going to the dealer as wind back tools don't work, have to be done electronically.

3, check they can reset, none round my area could, hense the main dealer.

4, I just went with the BMW ones, they lasted me 4 months which is pretty good for the usage compared with fronts.

5, the front and rears have a sensor on the passenger side only and you will need a new one when you replace the pads.

Sorry I do not have an answer to your questions , but as a 09 owner I would be interested in the response. also has anyone fitted ceramic pads ( think only possible to the front re electronic handbrake on rears) I am interested in reducing the dust without compromising the braking.

await with interest

I had my front brakes changed to Alcon 6 pots by Bird BMW on the front and use yellow Pagid pads on the front and standard BMW pads on the rear. This has reduced the brake dust considerably.
I'm not sure, but you should be able to get Pagid pads for standard BMW front calipers but you may need one of them drilling for the sensor. I just cable tied the sensor out of harms way as I can see how much life they have easily with my wheels.

my 08 after 31K needed both pads and disks. All of my zds appear to need rear pads at around 35K but the 08 needed disks which I thought must have been faulty or quad might have had it for 2 months before me.

Now the idrive is only indicative. if below 2mm the sensor will have been breached and you will have a dash board light on. So the idrive is telling you to take it to bmw for them to inspect (old z4 they do the check on each service).

My 10 plate at 31K went in for a brake check and they had 4mm left with recommendation replacement of 3mm so had them done. disks must be above a minimum thickness which I need to find the report out.

Replacing the rear pads a fairly straight forward job. Don't need a wind back tool. see here;

Have bought the pad wear sensor off ebay, i have yet to fit. They are on the right, on right hand drive.
I used EBC green pads, they do give off dust.
