Rear pads and disks - Advice please

Down to 3mm on my pads apparently so need to have them changed. Do I need to change the disks as well or can I get away with just the pads as there is nothing wrong with the disks that I can see. Also I am being quoted £200 inclusive of labour to have the lot changed at my Indie which I thought was a fair price. Any thoughts welcome

If there is no real wear 'lip' on the discs then no need to change them. With a discernible wear lip then the discs may still be within thickness spec now but will continue to wear with the new pads and it's not good practice to change just the discs later on so get them changed as well.

I'm just about to replace my rear discs.
The new discs have stamped on them wear min limit 18.4mm. They start out at 20mm.
My discs have done 52k and have quite a pronounced lip. Not yet measured but having problems with the wear sensor so going to change the lot.
Managed to get some BMW discs for £85, EBC Greenstuff pads £50 and wear sensor £8.

I just paid £400 for BMW to do my back discs and pads so yes a nice bargain

Initially took her to Kwik Fit but they had it for four hours and then couldn't do the work (apprently their computer for rolling back the electric handbrake wouldn't work on my E89 30i) :headbang: :headbang: :headbang:

Ouch! Is that the standard price to replace the rear pads? Mine are due in 1800 miles along with a change of break fluid!

For BMW I expect its all standard prices. Kwik Fit quoted me £320

That's a very steep for brake pads! I wouldn't expect this to be more than 1 hour in labour and £150 in material costs!

Let us know how you get on as I'll have to do this at some point.

Done the right wheel, didn't have time to do the left yet.
But tried resetting using odometer button and BC.
Won't reset, in fact has jumped from -400 to -1400.
Has reset in the past without problem.
Think I may have left it too long to replace the wear sensor.
Will try again when I replace the left pads.
Might have something to do with the fact the left EPB has yet to be backed off and reset. Will see.

Now have replaced both discs, worn to limit at 52k.
Pads and new sensor(Pagid).
Still can't reset the dash warning.
Sometimes the reset function will appear with the little clock rotating then just jumps back to saying -1400.
Moral is to replace the sensor before you hit -400?

Strange that the wear warning came up in the first place as there is hardly any wear on the original sensor when compared to the new one.
It's shaped like the side profile of a roof with a chimney. Only the end of the 'chimney' is worn slightly.
The old pads were about 5mm thick.

Beginning to wonder if this is the start of a battery problem.
Think it's original and therefore 6 years old.
Everything else works normally including the roof with engine off.
Wondering if disconnecting the battery for a few minutes might have some effect.
Tried connecting to OBD port but no codes show.(that's if the software I have is any good).

These wear sensors are more trouble than they are worth.
If the car was telling you the rear pads were worn and they still had 5mm left on them that is the same as our Mini.
Because there was so much pad material left I got the local garage to turn off the warning light and so far its not came back on.
Dont know how they did it though.
They said if it did come back on they could splice the wires for the sensor then turn it off and just visually keep an eye on the brakes for wear.
It seems to me that the manufacturers are ripping people off and a lot of people will see a warning light on and have the brakes renewed there and then when there is no need.

Did you look at the video I posted earlier?
FF to 13.00 and he shows the reset procedure.
Maybe he's doing something that you're not?

Beginning to suspect the after market wear sensor.
Might have to take the plunge and buy oem from dealer.
Next step to multi meter the existing sensor and see if I can make sense of what goes on in the sensor.
If it's just a case of bridging the wires, I can do that with the old sensor and do without the sensor if I can cancel the warning on the dash.
Interestingly managed to see code cc-id 71 (brake pad sensor) on dash.

Have tried unplugging and reset, then plug back in, no joy.
When I get to reset, the little clock turns and then the display jumps back to -1400.
There's an independent down the road, might have to take it there.
