Rear light stay on when engine off!

Hi,
I really hope someone can help, just one of my rear lights (passenger side) stays on when I have parked the car. I have done a bit of reading and found about the feature that you can pull the indicator stick towards you once the engine is off and both rear lights come on ... I can do this but when I start and stop the car the one on the drivers side goes off and the passenger stays on.

I have taken to unplugging the rear light when parked which is a pain ... any ideas on a better solution?!

Any help would be much appreciated.

If your indicator stalk in down (indicating left) then only your left light stays on. If it's up (indicating right), your right light stays on. In the middle (not indicating) no light should stay on. Are you saying that in the middle resting position the nearside light stays on?
 
That's exactly right yes.
Any help would be greatly appreciated

Just had a thought... in the resting g position and I pull it ... both come on... is that not right ?

Also will this nail the battery? I sometimes don't use it for weeks at a time ...

Cheap LED's will do that, mine in the numberplate lamp stay lit dimply for around 10 mins after I stop, until the ECU in the car "goes to sleep"

As stated above, you aren't parking your car up with the indicator stalk left in the position used for INDICATING are you, as on some vehicles, this controls the relevant side's parking lights? Is the front sidelight also on? If not, chances are it's the LED's, try swapping for a "normal" bulb and see if that solves it.
