REAR INDICATOR NIGGLES

The rear passenger side indicator is taking funny turns :x . It speeds up and goes mad, only the one side though, the other side is fine. Dash warning light comes on check bulb but it seems ok and works fine then a bit futher down the road it does it again. The garage has had it in to check and it worked ok for him. Then we got the car back and it starts again. Has anybody else had this? Husband asking should he just replace the whole unit now or leave it to see what happens?

Typical failure mode…a new unit or search ebay E89 rear light refurb…

No way to fix them..yes they are temperamental…

Cause is a water leak either through a crack between front and rear plastic or via rubber boot seal ..

I've not used these, but as I recall others have and there were no complaints.

I replaced a near side rear recently purchased from Autodoc. Price wasn’t exorbitant and it now shows how shabby (but working) the original offside one is. Never one to spend money if I don’t have to but…

Great help as always thanks everybody. Passed it all onto the husband as I'm busy with far more important stuff. Like finding a hairdresser and a cake shop. :innocent:

Mine did this twice yesterday  but only very briefly
Sat in the drive this morning and left the RH indicator on a while, and it started again - watching the rear light cluster it it dims slightly (flashes fast) then works ok

I had the LHS LEDs repaired by Clive at 'Blinkin Marvellous' on eBay (highly recommended) last year. Looks like I'll be sending him another to work his magic on

I bought a new OEM one from Italy via Ebay a month ago. All good. Was £160 but had to pay £40 tax on top when received- I was fully aware of this prior, so no issue.

There was a shortage for a period of time but they are now freely available

Shop around target price should be around £200

They did change the design on these at some point the z4 lifecycle - it's not obvious that they are letting in water until it's way too late & the 'rapid flash' is one of the key signs of failure.

If you remove the unit & tip it out, you might be surprised to see it contains a cupfull or 2 of water in there - sloshing about.

The newer indicator has a different mounting design (one less hole I think) that is meant to fix this.

In fact there have been at least 7 iterations according to our RobbieZ4..the move from 3 stud design to 2 stud was quite early on..more iterations after that..FWIW
