Car just failed MOT on rear discs and pads (got 70000 miles on them, well impressed) was wondering the best place to source them from and if theres any nasty surprises in store for the job?

Just had a quick flick on the net to find wildly differing prices £500 GSF, £350 ECP, £240 carparts4less.

I fitted Padgid pads and rear discs on mine a couple of months ago. They have been fine, mind you I don't do track days. They were bought from E.C.P. when they had 30% off.

Ecp and carparts4less are the same company

I bought my rear discs recently from my local BMW dealer (Wellsway BMW), they were happy to reduce the price with BMW club discount which got them within a fiver of anywhere I found online for genuine discs. :)

Genuine discs ? Do BMW manufacture these or are they bought in because I bought front discs from GSF few years back and they were ATE, exactly the same as the "genuine" factory fitted discs as I was replacing.

Almost certainly they are the exact same discs, just stamped differently. My replacement are stamped BMW along with a min thickness. If the ATE ones are cheaper I'd go for them. I was ordering the other bits I needed for an inspection service so I went for the discs as well. :)

Can't remember the size but you need a proper male hex socket to remove the rear calliper. There's not much space.

Was coming home from the post office earlier and came across a euro carparts store I didn't even know was there, ordered discs and pads for £316 which I thought was pretty competitive.

Doesn't seem such great value to me? OE discs from bmw are £268 https://www.amazon.co.uk/BMW-Genuine-Brake-Right-Drilled/dp/B005NFMELK probably less if you asked nicely in your local dealer, and pagid pads from ecp with the 30% discount code are £30.

Did that price include 30% off?

Hmm... £3 cheaper than I got them for, missed that one, you don't expect it to be cheaper at the main dealer either. Lesson learnt here !

270+30 = 300. You paid 316. That's more than £3.
Since you brought up the price in the 1st place I was just saying that I would expect a decent reduction in price over genuine OE parts when buying from ecp. Otherwise what's the point?
Oh and my dealer will always beat the price from BMW direct store.

Yeah no worries, was 316 with the pads pagid I think, was a local shop too, didn't want a mail order delivery as I'm out all day so the car should be back at the mot centre soon. :)

Sorry, didn't mean to come across as 'oh you could have got it cheaper here'. I'm sure you are aware, but always order online with ECP rather than buying from them in store as there's always a 25-30% discount code available.
It's also always worth giving bmw a call for parts, they're not so bad sometimes.

Right hand side was a real sod to get off and back on, and now it feels like its binding so I'll have to get the swine off again and take a look.

MOT fail sheet says "brake pads worn to under 1.5mm" well I just measured them and they are all over 3mm,just goes to show that telling lies will lose customers.

Having restored my old MG I took it in to a local place for the MOT with about 30 miles bedding-in on the whole car including suspension and brake system, they failed it on worn front pads! I went official with the DOT and they apologised and refunded etc but it just shows how brazen they can be, I mean you can actually see the pads, what BS goes on with hidden parts?
