car went in for a check over today, 2007 z4mr, and has found to have a leak on rear diff seal, im being told it could be the diff needs a overhaul as these cars are prone to this, thats why it s leaking, car has only covered 26000 miles, what can i do to check if diff is faulty or just needs new seal kit cheers, only had car 2 weeks, and know visible leaks underneath car or on driveway

If it hasn't been whining or clonking I think I'd just get the seal(s) replaced as it seems to be a fairly common problem on Ms. Search for "diff leak" on the M specific section of the forum.

For some reason it seems to be a more common issue on lower mileage cars. :?

Had my seal replaced last year, While I was getting the exhaust sorted. No issues with the diff, the seal was just weeping a little. If the diff is working and quite then just get the seal changed. Where about are you?

I’m in Essex, yes this is what I was thinking mechanic said to listen out for any diff noise but I can’t here anything with the exhaust anyway 🤦‍♂️, I’m wondering if it is common on the non m z 4s he’s thinking off, as said only done 26000 and had a inspection 2 done

I would follow the advice the others have already given and just replace the seal then keep an eye on it.

Yes it will just be the seals, a good part of it is purely age related rather than mileage.

It happens on all RWD beemers. Just had the propshaft diff seal on mine replaced. Cost a couple of hundred using the OE seal and the recommended LSD oil.
