Sure its not just ridiculously slow.. i remember mine on the e85 being awfully slow, on a 25 minute run to work it would just be showing a few lines in the screen, i just put it down to the soft top and as it was barely used didn't really faze me

Are you sure the connector leads haven't just popped off their contacts on one side or the other?
I had the same problem and the cable on the passenger side had come loose. It was hidden just behind the edge of the soft-top canvas. Pushed it back on and all worked again.

There's two relays for the HRW on the board behind the fuseboard. Sorry, got no details to hand but a search of the forum will possibly bring something up.
I had to replace one of them a couple of years ago to fix the HRW and been fine since.
