So my rear console button broke so I can get the door open. anyone else have this happen before? Is there a way to release the door without just prying the thing open and risk breaking it?

I posted a related how to a while back, hope it helps.

Not quite. There should be a little string pull in the boot, or rather, trunk, on the forward bulkhead which you pull to get the lock to release. They removed this on facelift cars, reasoning the lock driver was reliable enough, and no one ever puts anything important in there.

But all model years do have a lock that operates with the central locking system. If you don't want to repair the lock mechanism, you should be able to figure out a way to fully disable it so it doesn't accidentally lock on you. The cover is much easier to remove if you can get the door open, just take out the two rivets under the top edge of the door opening.

how are do you have to pull on that string? I pulled it and it didn't open :(

my insurance and registration is in there.. not that i need it but you never know...

With a facelift version, I have no string to pull, so couldn't say for sure. Based on how the lock mechanism works, it will take a firm steady pull for some time, you should feel it slowly give, takes about an inch of travel or a bit more, not including any stretch. You are essentially pulling on the rack of a small rack and pinion device, and the little pinion the rack spins is attached to a decent sized motor. That's why it'll only move slowly, and takes a firm pull. Mechanically, it's like trying to spin up a bicycle wheel by manually pulling on the chain while it's on the smallest cog.
