Rear Coil Spring

Hey All, car is just in at Sytners right now having its first inspection 2, all has gone well aside from Broken rear coil spring and buckled alloy on the other rear side. I have a couple of spare alloys so that is no problem but it seems the rear coil spring has been replaced quite a few times now on different sides and its always the side thats not under warranty from it being replaced the previous time! Has anyone figured out some replacement non OEM springs that give the same ride height as M Sport ones and around the same feel but do not break? This has to be a manufacturing fault... I mean our roads are bad but not that bad as say Mexico or Paris I recently drove in!

Thanks!

Shane.

This doenst make sense, the car is either under warranty or not.

I think he means the warranty of the new springs :?

ie offside breaks, replaces. The the nearside breaks, replaces, then the offside again but after the warranty on the previous replacement expires.... and so on...

I go in for an oil change soon and I am going to have my springs checked. As I understand it, you need to remove the wheel as the brake usually occurs towards the bottom of the coil. Also, both springs should be changed to have even tire wear and ride.

I am in my first year of CPO after buying my leased Z4. There is a $50 Co-pay, then full warranty coverage.

With 51,000 miles, I am also having the brake pads checked. I will do these outside of the dealer with some upgraded pads.

Good luck!

Yes exactly the spring is under warranty for 12 months from what I understand! I wonder if it is directly related to wheel size? 18" /19" sure must put more stress on the suspension components and the alloy itself as there is less rubber between the rim and road to take a beating I guess this is why all the new bmw's have cracked rim problems and broken springs... I may try ditching the runflats again and go for a normal tyre with a slightly larger tyre within 3% e.g 265/35/18 ?

Thanks

Shane.

I believe that the main cause of broken rear springs is that grit lands in the seating that the spring sits on, and the movement of the spring against it punctures the coating allowing salty water to penetrate and sit inside the spring coating rusting it away til it weakens and eventually breaks. Thats why fronts don't suffer the same (too high for the grit) and its usually the bottom of the spring that breaks. Try and direct a pressure washer at the seating regularly to blast the grit away. Sometimes I think uncoated springs would be better as they wouldn't allow the water to remain in contact permanently with the spring.
