Rear coil spring corroded

Car just passed MOT with only one advisory ‘Rear coil spring corroded’

Car is at 91k miles and from the history I can see it had the springs replaced at 30k miles. I got the car at 60k miles. I think I should just replace them both seeing as they are only £40 each (Sachs) and prone to breaking

You can just leave them till they go as they don't usually fail in a vehicle immobilising fashion. You may get a few more years out if them it's hard to say. Just double check the replacements are the right ones for your car suspension either SE or Sport.

Thanks Mack, yes I checked they’re SE (doh maybe it's not after checking the VIN). I could leave them I guess but on the flip I do a long 2 hour journey and back every week and if they’re corroded I think I’d feel more comfortable knowing they’re new

Ok I just checked the VIN Number and now that says I have M Sports supspension doh :headbang: even though my coupe is listed as an SE

Why would my Coupe be listed as an SE and then have specified M sports suspension, M sports seats and M multi function steering wheel, it also had 18’ mv2 wheels so I don’t understand what part of it is actually considered to be SE

Probably just the lighter headlining and thinner ARBs
Strange how it was specced that way, wonder what the money saving was at the time

My si roady was the same, listed as an se but had all the sport goodies specced as options from new!
I don’t know why the original owner didn’t just buy a sport model?

I’m sure the roof lining is black, thing is it’s pretty highly specced with pro nav, Bluetooth, hifi upgrade, xenons, sun protection, extra storage etc so not sure what the rational was as it was nearly £40k new

Most of us go for Suplex springs over the OEM Sachs as much better made (same size and spec) . Loads of threads on this.

If it has sports suspension it will have the thicker arb’s

The only things I can think of that might be considered SE is the gearknob and maybe the door sills?
gear knob and door sills are the same on se / sport, so you've got a fully loaded msport, but still classed as an SE. The original buyer must've had his reasons, but I can't imagine they would've saved much money :-?

Rather than someone spending a fortune speccing it to Sport spec its more likely the manufacturer/suppling dealer screwed up with the admin and registered it as an SE not a Sport. Wouldnt be the first time Ive seen this sort of error on a host of different cars over the years.

oh ok, it's a shame, because people tend to avoid SEs

I went for a 3.0i SE (E85) becuase I wanted the slightly softer suspension, only found afterwards that all 3.0i's came with sport suspension as standard unless they deleted the option at point of order. Doh! Apart from Sport Seats I'm not sure what separates SE from Sport, the cars look the same, I think the specs are largely determined by what options people went for when ordering new.

This is only true of pre facelifts though. Post facelifts se do not have sport suspension.

This sounds like a plausible reason as to what’s happened, maybe SE’s attract a very slight reduction in insurance costs 😁
