Intermittent amber warning light, diagnostics said "brake pad sensor failure". BMW main dealer checked and apparently I only have 500 miles left on rear inner pads. Quoted £270 for replacement.
Can anyone just confirm that this is normal wear?
Can anyone reccommend an independent Zexpert within reasonable proximity to NW london? Happy to travel for good work.
what should be a reasonable cost - pads (proper) and sensors, labour?

:D Wind deflector retro-fitted (bit indulgent i know) comfort access replacement door handle ordered. Treated myself to centre console cup holder insert, just need a star-shaped screwdriver now to fit it!
Have a great (very sunny) tuesday

Seems early for rears my last car had over 33000 on and pads were fine. Would think you could get them done cheaper I'm sure someone on here will source you a better price :D

Seems a bit early - been tracking the car? As for cost - brake pads should be about £30 a set and it should take a competent technician no more than an hour to change them including cleaning/lubricating the calipers. Even at £130 + VAT an hour this would translate to a max price of some £186. Having said that, quotes of £270 for this seem quite common. So either BMW technicians are incompetent, they are charging over £100 for a set of brake pads or they are just ripping you off. Take your pick.

I would advise doing the job yourself but I believe the electronic parking brake needs to be released/reset by hooking up to the BMW diagnostic box of tricks!

Our's were just changed at 31k. The rears wear faster on the Z4, especially the 35i, due to the rear wheel drive and traction control.

Brakes are used for stability control a hell of a lot, so depending on what journeys you do it's possible. At the end of the day its a physical thing you can see yourself regarding how much life is left. Boss of mine had to get the rears changed on his Jag XF after 9K.

Thanks to all who responded - brilliant and reassuring feedback as usual. Srhutch, I believe the previous owner did mostly commuter runs in heavy london traffic so not sure if that contributed. Garvin, yes pricey and if I can find a decent independent I will be able to inspect the pads myself. And you're right about the parking brake. An advisory about having the park brake adjusted was on a fairly recent mot, so I'll get that done at the same time. The main dealer did say that 35's were heavier on pads especially the rear. I'll only find out after getting them done and driving (carefully) myself. Oh dear, will have to go out today in the sunshine and talk to a few independents!
thanks again

Thanks david, that makes me feel much better. Talked to an independent today and showed me that they were worn. Apparently traction control and EBD on 35's work more because of the power delivered to the rear weels which can contribute to early wear.
hey ho.
