Rear Brake Change - Guide?

Started changing the discs and pads on the zed on the weekend but got stuck with the bastard caliper retaining bolts.

In the mean time i read somewhere about a screw or something that needed to be adjusted to do the rear discs/pads.

Does anyone have any more info on this?

Hi,

basically there is an adjuster inside the disc for the handbrake shoes, this has to be backed off to allow the disc to come off.

To back it off there is an official way ..which requires special tools etc., and an unofficial way.. which I've done and it worked fine.
Your choice, do a search, lots of info. about it on this forum.

You insert a screw driver in through one of the wheel bolt holes and turn the adjuster away from the main body of the adjuster...very hard to explain, If you get one off it'll make sense and the other will be easier.

Good luck

How exactly did you get stuck? I did a set a couple of weeks ago, no bother.

Edit, just seen about the shoes, if you release the hand brake whilst removing/fitting it shouldn't be an issue should it?

Also, you say caliper retaining bolts? Were they just tight as f**k? Most are.

Just couldn't undo them. Ridiculously tight.

Going to try again this weekend.

Sounds easy enough then. Thanks for that.

As RJS-Z4 has said, what about just leaving the handbrake off?

Hi,

you could try that...you might be lucky, most of the time there is a ridge on the inside of the disc/Drum from wear(or lack of wear in that area) that hits off the shoes when trying to remove it, that's why you have to back off the adjuster !

Yeah he's not wrong, you generally can get a "feel" for if it's going to come off or not.

Chris, try a bit of shock and unlock on the bolts if you have any, and maybe a short (but longer than a ratchet) breaker bar.

The caliper retainin bolts are a PITA.. did mine recently. Ended up using an impact socket and wrench, and smacking the bolts with a hammer (plus halfrauds' freeze spray).

Got my hands on a nice long bar and some shock unlock from Halfords.

Fingers crossed for Sunday morning!

If the bar doesn't do it with relative ease, then I'd advise popping to a garage and getting them to stick a impact gun on them. The constant shock of the gun should work them loose, where as applying 50 stone of pressure through a long bar may snap the bolt. Try the bar, if it feels like it's really not going to go, impact gun time.
