Realistic MPG guide on a 2.5 2003

Hi everyone
What average MPG should I expect from a 2.5
I drive to work fifty miles a day mostly motorway and rarely go about 70 mph or below 55 on route
I'm trying to get a informed opinion before purchasing
Thanks in advance

I do 35 miles each way to work (small amount of urban, 75-80% motorway/70mph A road) and I can easily get mid 30s MPG without really even trying. If I really wanted to go for economy, I reckon early 40s should be achievable over a whole tank. This is on a 3.0si coupé so I would expect you in a 2.5 to get mid to upper 30s. If it doesn't have cruise control, you should be able to retro fit it very easily for about 85 quid (http://bmwministyle.co.uk/).

Cheers,

Phill

I have a 2.5si and use it daily. Get about 31mpg mixture of town and dual carriageway. Early morning no traffic but evening stuck in lots of stop and go. I have been known to be a little heavy on the right foot though.

As others have said, I have an 04 2.5 and if left alone the OBC (not the most accurate thing but a guide anyway) usually settles out about 34mpg for all kinds of driving.
On a motorway at a steady 70 its about 38-39mpg, the most it has ever recorded was about 42mpg.
For what they are pretty much everyone on here will agree they are remarkably fuel efficient.

Thanks so far for your helpful replies
I suppose I'm being slightly cautious as my current car has average fifty three miles per gallon in the last 7k that I had drove it and I've been very spoilt on fuel costs however I'm totally uninspired in the drive so I'm weighing up the expected change of monthly costs I can expect to observe and deciding is the reward worth it

How much is the road tax per six months or year for the 2.5 please?

Wow that's 8.6 x more expensive per year than my current car
Makes me wonder if the heart or the head will win this time

this year it has gone up by £15, they are taking the p*** :headbang:

the only thing is that you only live once,so enjoy it

8.6 times more expensive ?

So you pay £30 a year ?

If the difference between your present car @ 53 MPG and the Z4 @ around 35-40 MPG is worrying you, then maybe the Z4 is not for you. To be honest, I can't see the point of buying a car like a Z4, then drive it everywhere trying to acheive maximum MPG.

If this is compounded by the difference in Road Tax then I'd forget it.

Dr your maths skills clearly haven't failed you I do pay 30 a year with a very fuel efficient car.

I do agree that you don't buy a z4 for fantastic economy but i needed to get some expert advice on likely ownership costs in relation to my regular driving style.

I must say I feel there is plenty of pleasure to be had from driving the z4 smoothly on a cruise and yet at the same time realise driving like a tit occasionally is probably lots of fun too.

Thanks so far to everyone for your kind replies

Absolutely.

I do in fact enjoy a steady 70MPH cruise on the Mway now and again with the Cruise Control on. Never fails to amaze me how economical it can be when you try - especially as mine is a 3.0 Auto.
Then the flip side is a blast through the countryside, where I'm happy to forget fuel economy for the duration.

That's why for me, the Z4 was the best all round choice. More than enough power and fun when the need arises, yet amazingly economical when the mood takes you (and you want to listen to music rather than the sublime straight six soundtrack).

Best of luck with your decision.

7 months in my 2.5 the mpg is as follows.

just town driving 27mpg
mixed driving 30mpg
all motorway 39 mpg (cruise control from london to chesterfield @ 75 ish)

All these figures are for normal driving, not super economy or driving hard.

I'm averaging 34mpg with a 75 mile commute, 75% of this is mway the rest is town and A roads. This is in a 3.0 manual, where the extra gear really helps with the economy. As for the tax, any large engined petrol car is going to be top whack, but you get what you pay for,and an £230 extra over 12 months is not really that much in the grand scheme of things

My 2.5 gets around 22mpg in town  but averages around 35 for normal use.

I use to worry about mpg and couldnt decided between economy or fun, fun won in the end and I haven't looked back! If you enjoy driving get a Zed!

As before depends on how and where you want to drive it. I can get 38-40 on long motoway journeys doing 65-70 in my 3 ltr, 28-32 on daily 15 mile commute and below 25 with sport button on and driving it like you stole it.

I have a 3.0i that gets horrible MPG compared to you all. I think it has something to do with my foot jammed on the pedal. I have never actually measured my MPG by calculation at fillup. I have looked at the computer estimate and it isn't too good. If I want MPG I drive my miserable boring Honda (my commuter). I am surprized by how high MPG some of you are getting - WOW

Same here.....95% of my driving is my daily commute which is 50/50 Town & "A" Roads, never going much above 40mph. I've never done a calculation but the computer always shows round 24mpg. :(
On a 250 mile motorway run I got 38mph. :D

I drive my 2003 3.0i about 40 miles 2 or 3 weedays per week. I drive it in 4 lots of 10 miles on country lanes and drive 'enthusiastically'. 'Sport' mode about 50% of the time. Every second weekend or so it'll get used for short trips and the occasioal 50 or 60 mile 'cruise'. Not done a long weekend away yet but will do soon.

In the last 1500 miles I've averaged 27.5mpg which I'm pretty happy about. But then, I had an RX8 for a while...

I regularly commute to Heathrow (90 miles of mostly motorway) and will return around 38 mpg at around 75-80.
To be honest I think the MPG is pretty good for the type of car. I know there are quite a lot of members rate filling your car up with a higher quality fuel, but for me I resent paying the ridiculous fuel prices we have and will always go for the best cost option.
