Real World MPG

Dont go via the on board computer go via trip and fill up i.e. fuely app in my signature.

It depends on how you drive, flooring it high revs lots of gear changes kills mpg.

Cold engine small runs kills mpg

Hills kill mpg

driving 10mph kills mpg

For me I do say 60 miles city and rest country roads, hilly, I commute 20 miles each way in the peak district.

old z4 2.5 32mpg long runs possibly 36
New z4 3.0 auto in sports and manual changing having fun 27- 31, flatter roads ave 40mph 32mpg
new z4 2.8 manual just running it in so 2nd 4th and 6th gear max 3K rpm last fill up 32.8 mpg looking to be 36mpg+ on the current tank

You may have noticed I have always got the sweet spot engine, best performance, mpg AND price. with the 3.0 and 2.8 sub 6 seconds is way fast enough. There are always pimped up remapped GTI that have 550 bhp let them go who cares, but the majority of other cars they can s>d off.

Now the turbos. If you keep it from the turbo spin range its a 2.0 so following slow traffic you have a light car with a 2.0 engine so great mpg, but get the turbo spinning you have 245 horses needing fodder.

The 3.5i sorry 3.0 turbo is like my old 3.0 which needs a fair bit to move the lump and feed 6 cylinders all the time, but hay push that into the turbo range with 300+_horses yes you get 0.5 seconds faster but need a lot more fodder.

I know mpg should not matter to a sports car, but having the horses under the bonnet is key and they need feeding, but its a shame we cant have a the 3.5i that shuts 2 or 3 cylinders off brings one turbo in at 1500 but press sprots and it chirps up all 6 and twin turbos when we need it and not in the city where 30mph is still a bit low for the 7 speed gear box.

My averidge is 22MPG , I have to say that if you are going to worry about MPG perhaps you shouldnt be buying a sports car

The OP was only asking what real figures people are getting.

......perhaps if you can't spell you shouldn't be posting comments on a forum!! :poke:

Oops I will stand in the corner for the next 10 minutes , however I still think my point is valid

To a point...I don't care too much, I just want 25mpg+ I have run a car averaging sub 20mpg, it just wasn't funny!

TBH...next Z will probably be 3.5is, or a Boxster!

Currently seeing 31mpg (20i msport) - mind you that is cold stop/start short journeys to work mostly atm and is simply the reading taken from the readout - how accurate is that? <shrug>

I did a long hoon up North last August and worked out from the fuel used (man maths back of a fag packet!) I managed 35mpg overall (and to be fair my friend and I were not exactly hanging about).

Pretty solid considering the type of car it is, not entirely sure the BMW quoted 41mpg is possible, some of the results peeps have managed on this thread are good tho :D

Cheers

MPG is a consideration, unless its a toy used in the sumer like some 911 I know. I use mine as my main car 44 miles per day so I want a competent car and the zd is perfect. I had always seen 3.0 then the 3.2 and dreamed of them and I got a 3.0 last time with only a slight drop in mpg.

As soon as the 2.8 was called I thought ill have a bit of that, same performance but possibly 10mpg more, no brainer. Petrol is one of the main drains so if I could gain a bit more at the expense of straight 6 smoothness and exhaust note then so be it. Even if it was 1 second slower which it is not I may have still considered it if I can get 20% back on petrol.

Time will tell but I am still just over half full (55l is the tank) and done 239 miles, in the 3.0 i would have been lucky to be 180 by now, so possibly on for over 38mpg, running it is so no +4k revs as yet.

The boxter will be the better investment for similar outlay to a 3.5si they hold the price a bit better but not as practical and servicing / running costs are just way higher so cost of ownership will be higher. I heard you need 2K per year to run one, hay people are complaining of 500 for a full service after some 40K miles, little porker needs a bit more tlc. Not as practical i.e. no real boot space and the engine rattling behind you all the time and exhaust noise soon looses its attraction, yes I have had one for a bit, then the comments that I could not afford a real car just lost the shine a bit.

A raz4 says don't go by the computer
I found this out this week when I did a full to empty tank in almost all town driving. Computer says 23 but fuel pump says27.5
Mines an auto and trounces the boxster 2.7's 19. Plus it's faster

I would make a decision based on what deal you can get. ie it's not worth paying huge bucks for a 2.0 over an older 23i just for a couple f more mpg especially if you are doing not that many miles a year. The extra cost of fuel is negligible really.

Example, wife's looking at a new 1 series m sport and considering a 116i or 116d. Real world is on 8000 miles a year is a difference of £260 and that's based on a differential of 15mpg!. But the diesel cost over a grand more plus... Well it's smelly diesel isn't it

23i, 30-33 around town, 50 on the motorway.
Looking at the rate of fuel burn on the gauge i trust the computer to be accurate.

Pacemeker Agreed thats the problem with the D

I spend 65 per week so £3,380 If I can pull 20% i.e. 36 mpg from 30 mpg thats £676 per year over 3 years, or £2028 FOR THE SAME PERFORMANCE is something to look at.

Some really helpful feedback there thanks guys.

In response to some - I fully appreciate the costs involved with running a sports car and like someone kindly pointed out I was asking only about real world (day to day) commute mpg - fuel is a big factor when looking at a new car these days hence my query. For the record my current car gets around 26-27 on the commute so anything around this is acceptable.

The main reason I enquired was that as it is a co car I have a cap of budget and for that amount there are some very nice 23i knocking around with low miles and good spec. Or I can look at a 20i with perhaps lower spec and lower miles.

As Pacemaker put it for the sake of 1 or 2 mpg its not a deal breaker.

Cheers for all the input - seems like a great forum!

whoop 35.1MPG I don't think I can beat this as such, will look at ron 97 and sport+ as these had some improvement on the 10 plate 3.0 auto.

Pic is from full tank and trip and average MPG reset. I did completely fill the tank this time it was just showing at the filler cap!!!!!.
