Real World MPG

Ok not sure if anyone can help - I am not a Z4 owner (yet) Just looking for some feedback on the following;

I've been thinking about a Z4 as a co car - currently travelling about 16 miles per day all city. Planning on moving further away from the office so distance will just about double and remains largely stop start at rush hour. Current car is a VW 2.0l T petrol and if careful I can get about 25-27 mpg each way. Can any owners / daily drivers share experiences how near to this would both an sdrive 23i and a later model sdrive 20i be? My budget would cover both cars (used) but I do like the thought of the 6 cly not the 4cyl.

Cheers for any help

I'm in a 2003 3.0 and do 11 miles into London, 11 miles out. That run never ever gets below 22 MPG.

That sounds perfectly reasonable tbh! and whats a few extra mpg sacrifcied for a traditional BMW sound!

My 3.0 usually hovers around about 29mpg with a mix of rural and town driving. On a long drive it can get up to 35 on a mix of motorway and a roads.

Thats an E85 though.

I do about the same miles as you everyday going to and from Birmingham City centre, and I have had the 2.3i and now have the 2.0i. Both cars get about 27-29mpg depending on weather.
On a good run you will get more mpg out of the 2.0i though.
Don't get put off by the 4 cly thing, it's a good engine and feels so much lighter in the corners than the 6 cly and you dont need to rev the knackers off it!!

I'm just over a week in to driving my 20i. I have yet to see anything near the published MPG from BMW - they claim 30 Urban and 50 extra urban - http://www.bmw.co.uk/en/new-vehicles/z4/roadster/2012/technical-data.html

Complete bollox!

Even when I reset the computer and did a 30min motorway cruise with the cruise control set at 75 I was only getting 37mpg. On my daily commute which is a mix of city and a good stretch of A-road, I've been averaging 25mpg.

I am a little disappointed, I haven't even been pushing it yet as I am being very good and sticking to BMW's recommended run-in period, I haven't been over 4000 RPM for more than a few seconds in total.

Figures above sound right, and I'd agree that the 4-cyl engines help the handling having tried a 20i some time ago, it turns in noticeably quicker than the heavier 6 cyl cars. Though the 6cyls IMHO have a better sound. Depends what you want. If I were buying now, I'd get the 4cyl (albeit I'd go 28i) knowing the handling is better. Nothing wrong with the 20i though, and I'd pick that over the 23i personally.

:o ooooh Maniac, you've changed

Never ;) I just think if you're choosing between 23i and 20i, given that the 4 cyls add positively on the handling, that would be my preference. The 28i for me would be the best all rounder as it has near 35i power with snappier handling to boot. That said, I'm not giving up my 35i :)

I get about 33mpg from my 28i in a mix of driving, which is a bit better than my previous 23i, but not a lot.

You will get that and better on a 16ml commute mine hovers an 28 and I do lots of short trips 2 to 3 mls also cant agree with you Maniac that the 20i is better than the 23i have tried a 20i and the main thing is the noise is missing and somhow it feels less solid which just gives me a thrill every time I put my foot down this is the reason my new one is a 35i and not a 28i. 8)

;) I didn't expect any 23i owners to agree with my opinion of course, but each owner will think theirs is best. My opinion and experience is above and is for the benefit of the OP should he find it useful in addition to the MPG differences other owners report. I don't think you'll be disappointed by the 35i Paul (and if you are, remap it into a fire breathing beast).

Its arriving on the 19th Maniac beginning to get excited after all the anst about the colour spec wether the sensible chioce was 4cyl but whoever said a Z4 was a sensible choice  :driving:

Mine usually is urban and town driving but not much traffic as I live in the country. I have a Z4M coupe and over 9000 miles have averaged 23.9

general driving I average 26.4, and extra urban I regularly see 32-35mpg.

I do mostly city driving in my 2.0i and get between 31-32 mpg, and mornings I am literally stuck in traffic. Combined approx 37-38 mpg.

I average around 37mpg urban and 40-44mpg extra urban in my E85 2.0i. But I'm an old git and drive sensibly, when I do go mad the figures drop dramatically

I have the 20, it returns 33mpg on average. I have seen it as high as 43mpg on a long run and as low as 23 when i was having a bit of a play...only the thought of replacing those back tyres stopped it going lower!

I have not regretted buying my Z for one minute, particularly the minutes in the sun with the throttle pedal buried in the carpet, the engine revving and my smile stretching from ear to ear!
