Real World MPG??

Evening All,

Can someone give me some advice for real world MPG figures for a Z4 20i or 28i?

I am soon to be starting a new job, which will mean I will be trekking 50miles around the m25 every morning. I used to have a 35is but now I need to find something more economical. I have been debating a 640d, but looking at the claimed MPG, the Z4 and 6 get very close (around 50mpg on the motorway). I was just wondering if this translates to real world MPG?

Thanks for posting the link Pbondar, but unfortunately it doesn’t really answer my question.

Hi, the 20i & 28i both have the same economy figures from bmw, 50mpg is possible but not very likely unless you drive with ballet shoes on & act as though you’re taking part in an economy challenge.
40mpg isn’t hard to get if you drive sensibly.
These are just my findings of course, you might drive like an extra from Mad Max for all i know :P

My 20i seems to be able to provide around 40mpg on a cross country run if I'm careful. A mix of 70 miles motorway and dual carriageway plus 20 miles of A road in 40 and 50 limits with a few villages to go through on the way up to Bristol.

Came back a slightly different route with less m-way and more 60mph A roads. I was in courier mode and managed 29mpg. I did have more fun though......

It's been remapped up to 28i levels of grunt and I don't think there is much of a difference in consumption, apart from the tendency to give it the beans a little more with the higher power output :driving:

I would not go down the diesel route. We may find them banned from many cities before too long!!! Used prices are also likely to drop as they become less popular.

My 20i is a weekend fun car so tends to get pushed along a little.
No motorways in Norfolk, and very few dual carriageways, so it's mostly twisty B-roads.
It is all standard (so obviously I need to allow for the drag from the whippy aerial  )
It seems to have settled at 36.6mpg.

Here is my experience

My car is a 2013 20i. It has almost 60k miles with full service history. The car has also been remapped (was done within 4 weeks of ownership by me.)

The best I have ever seen from her is 45mpg (44.7 if we are being precise) this was painful to achieve, and the effort involved in doing so took away from enjoying the car.

The average I achieve on normal day to day driving ( mainly careful, with a bit of fun thrown in) is 37mpg

Typical tank range is between 350 & 400 miles depending on fuel used. Shell V Power is her preferred drink, and BP is her least favourite.

I have stopped trying now, and just except whatever she gives me. So long as I actually arrive at my destination and have a smile on my face, it’s done it’s job

I don't think you'd find it easy to get 40+ mpg day in day out without a bit of effort.
Like others here, I've achieved it on a long run without much traffic or many junctions to negotiate... but it takes a driving style I didn't buy a z4 for.
My own experience suggests that somewhere around 37-8mpg might be a realistic target with a fairly restrained driving style
I probably averaged closer to 32-34mpg for my first year of ownership of a 2015 e89 20i Auto - but mainly short runs and some a bit 'spirited'.
6 weeks ago it got remapped (so now effectively a 28i) and mpg since then is lower (25-26mpg) but nearly all my driving has been based on exploring the performance delta. A gentle cruise earlier this week suggests that 37-38 is still do-able if I 'behave'. :D

I think an M25 jaunt wil be self limiting..so I would expect 36mpg+

The E89 is a good cruiser but the 640d is on a different level. If you only want 1 car and it has to do a 100mile round trip across the M25 each day then the 640d is the choice.

You could keep the 35is and buy a cheap 530d with a slushbox.
