real world difference between super sport and PS5's

Has anyone had real world experience of the Michelin Super Sport and the Pilot Sport 5's

It is time for some new rear tyres on my Z4M

The car has had Super sports on it since I bought the car and have been happy enough with them but these are now an old design

The Pilot Sport 5's are newer and a little cheaper

So has anyone changed from Super Sports to Pilot Sport 5's and noticed any difference

Chances are the 2 tyres are better than most drivers ability on the road so never get to the raged edge of the tyres ability

So far Asda tyres are the cheapest I have found for 255/40/18's £445 for two fitted locally

I have: PS5 are overall better BUT clearly more of a "sporty daily" than a "super sport" so cold and wet grip is way better, no need to get up to temp, much smoother transition at the edge BUT lower maximum grip and directivity.

As for prices, I recommend you check Camskill which is where I got mines for a good price

One question though: are you changing only the rears? I did this as well as ended up with very understeery behaviour when cold/damp...

Most reviews say CSC7 are better over all and cheaper (well that PS4S), I would have thought for an M that PS4s or CSC7 would be more suited

Yes as the fronts are good the rears are just above the wear bars and one has worn into the inside shoulder a bit

I've only experienced MPSS as my Z4M came fitted with them on 19" CSL Reps.

I collected it on a drizzly December day and they were absolutely hopeless! Months later on warmer dry days they were great, but I like to be able to use it all year so when I swapped to 18" wheels I had Kumho Ecstas fitted based on reviews on here and they work all year round, as well as being pretty cheap. They may not ultimately be as good in the right conditions as the MPSS, but on most pot-holed UK roads I don't think I'd get the chance to exploit any difference anyway.

I’ve had both tyres on the same car, though not on the zed. The mileage you get on the 4S was much better (30% more) although below 3mm poor grip on both!

I have MPSS on mine and ihey’re great in the dry. The one time I’ve driven in rain (very light user!) it was well; scary.

For real world stuff, I’d say in general the newest tech tyre is going to be the best (and often most economic due to better wear).

This nails it. The Supersports are a more track-biased tyre, so potentially not great for cold and wet commutes if you're driving a daily.

I track my Z4 on road tyres (latest Eagle F1s), and the levels of grip until you overheat them are fantastic. Given that you're REALLY unlikely to push hard enough to overheat your tyres on the road, I'd say that any of the current crop of UHP road tyres will be absolutely fine, and you'll probably notice no difference.

I'd personally just buy the cheapest of: Pilot Sport 4S/5, Eagle F1 A6 or Continental PremiumContact 7.

I have two sets of wheels for my M240i. One has PS5 and the other SS. Tyres are all 2021 (SS) and 2023 (PS5). The SS for normal driving are poor in my view. Any form of energetic use of the throttle feels skitterish and slightly wayward. The PS5s work straight out if the box. As others have said it’s because the SS need to warm up and basically don’t do this in the slow speed world of U.K. driving. I am sure SS are ultimately better on the track though

Yeah I had PSS on my 240. Very very sketchy with the power in anything but hot dry conditions with warm tyres.
Cold tyres, damp and cold weather and any throttle application made the traction control light up like a Christmas tree.
Go with PS5

I agree with the general consensus and expect the only possible advantage of the PSS over the PS5 would be steering feel. Dry grip and braking are likely very similar and in any other area I’d expect the PSS to be out performed by the newer stuff. But that’s progress for you.

I went with the Goodyear Supersport as I wanted the best feel and dry performance in the original sizes (can you get the PS4S or CSC7 in M sizes?) and without spending Michelin money. When they were launched they got rave reviews, however now it seems wet weather performance is being criticised/improved upon by the competition. Honestly, I think the wet weather grip is brilliant and more than enough for a 99% dry use car.
