(did a search) and got many varying thoughts on the subject.

Not so much concerned about oil brand. I just ordered 2 gallons of Red Line 10W-40 full synthetic from a US dealer, "Summit Racing" 2 Gallons, no shipping charge, plus tax came to $105.35 USD. I will get one oil change and have a quart left for the next (assuming I don't have to top up between changes). Very pricey from what I am used to for an oil changes in my other vehicles.

The man I bought the car from had the oil changed a couple days before I picked up the car (very nice man). I have the receipt and though it cost him $98 USD, the receipt did not specify the brand used.

My concern is how long (miles) should I go before I change the oil. I'm thinking 5000-ish.

Common answers I saw in the search were 10K, 7500, once a year. Probably should have created a poll...

Anyway just curious in case anyone wants to weigh in on what they do or make a suggestion on when I should do the next oil change.

Hi, how many miles do you drive a year? If it’s very low or if you do lots of short journeys that’s going to have a bearing on oil change frequency

Oil once in the sump will start to detiriorate once it is exposed to combustion gasses and the air. Use a quality synthetic oil and change it yearly if under 6000 miles if you exceed 6000 miles then change it at that point. I know that all car manufacturers try to extend service intervals but personally I would prefer to pay for oil as against an engine! It may be seen as unduly cautious but it works for me.You might want to alter the oil grade depending on the milage of the car and prevailing temperatures where you are. There may be a table in your handbook?

Every 7,500 miles, just means it’s exactly half distance standard bmw recommended service schedule... so everything falls neatly.
