I love my remapped 20i e89 but if the money was back in the bank I’d buy a Z4m roadster instead, definitely the best looking of all the Z4 convertibles IMHO.
I thought Z4M was a hard top only!

I would stick with my E85 solely because i like a manual transmission.
I understand that both next generations are better cars, but I like a clutch.

I did a fair bit of research before I got my e89 so knew what my needs were however in a perfect world would upgrade the sound system & have a DAB radio

My car has the rest of my wants & anything it doesn’t have (folding mirrors) for example I can live without

I’m not a car guy really so all the tuning & mods go over my head if I’m honest

Sometimes I think maybe I should have gone for a 6 cylinder but I haven’t test driven one so I can’t miss what I never had

Sound plan! If you are happy with your 4 don't drive a 6.

I was happy with my 6s, until I drove a couple of Ms.

Well I’m currently looking at getting an e92 6 pot for a bit more grunt in the fleet, my Z or VW T-Roc as much as I love them both in their own right, haven’t satisfied the itch :driving: much to my wife’s displeasure

My 35i was my choice, I’m very pleased with it. If I was to buy again it would be more based on condition rather than mileage.

Not a bad idea - my current daily is an E90 330i and it is great!

I made a point of avoiding later cars with the N53 engine as it seems to suffer from Injector and High Pressure Fuel Pump issues - and sounds a bit like a diesel thanks to having direct injection.

Manual transmission is available in the e89 range too buddy

and it is on the G29 too, well in certain countries it is, the M40i with a manual box would make it more appealing to some. I think that was one of the positives of the e89, that you could get the 35i with a manual transmission

z4m is the roadster variant & z4mc is the coupe

Very nice choice, my dream would be a 335i but don’t think I could justify the tax, fuel and ongoing maintenance….not yet anyway.

Actually one thing that consistently pisses me off with BMW is this stupid strategy of having so many usb/Bluetooth/media options.

Trying to get them upgraded or changed after the event is prohibitively expensive and technically difficult, at least for me.

I was originally after a 3.0 but at the time I couldn't find one with the colour/extras/specification/mileage I was looking for. I ended up with an extremely low mileage 23i SE, it had most of the things I was looking for (iDrive/pdc/heated seats etc.) and the thought was over time I could add/change the other things I wanted (which I've done). It only gets really used at weekends or when the weathers nice and in the years I've owned it has been extremely reliable and economical to own. Its going to be 13 years old this year (still looks/feels new sitting now at 34k) and I've been contemplating its replacement for a while, I've considered a G29 (amongst others) but with the rise of EV's and the potential demise of anything petrol/diesel or hybrid looming, I've decided to keep the money in the bank and at least have couple of more years fun with my little 23i. Looking back, it was the right car for me.

Not on this side of the pond. I keep forgetting most of the people in the forum are in the UK.
Here in Colombia, the e89 came only with electronic transmission. Also, I got a 2.5 lts because they sold the e85 only with that engine; so we could not get a 3.0, for example.
You guys in Europe get way more choices.
But, assuming that I could get manual on the e89 or g29, I would stick to the e85 because of the looks. I find the original design to be minimalistic in the best possible way. And one thing that I think BMW has not done that well is the treatment of the tail lights in the e89 and g29. Actually, all across their line. The most beautiful tail lights, to me, in all of BMW are the Z4 e85 and, first and greatest, the 5 series around 2000. The TRANSFORMER look was awesome, and very distinctive. Now, they are also very beautiful, but are on par with MB and Audi. In the past, they were way ahead of those two.
Taste, I guess :)

I would take a 3.0 minimum next time, buy the 23i I bought had the spec I wanted and was quite happy with it, would love a 35i in VO next time, would need to be an auto though

Just get one. They are really great cars and are probably only going to increase in value. As much as I love my Z4 I think the 335i is a much better all-rounder. I love the simplicity of them, a manual one without an iDrive would be really the most modern car without any modern faff. Hydraulic steering, normal handbrake, no touchscreens.

There's a huge wealth of aftermarket items for them and DIY guides for every possible issue.

I answered I wouldn't change a thing as we just bought a 35is. But if answering a month ago (when we had a 20i) I would have said I would choose a different model in the E89 family :) . For sure I'd like a slightly higher spec'ed car, but ours has the bare minimum I'd want being front and rear parking sensors and heated seats. I'd happily not bother with the electric seats, though for all I know they may have been standard on this model. The options I miss only a little are electric folding mirrors, extended storage and cruise control...
