Different engine on my car though - a few pages before there is a link to a thread on zpost for the pre-facelift. However... The principles are the same.
 
That's a good point - I though it was only 3.0 litre engines that have them ?
 
i didnt think it gives more grunt just more noise in the cabin. i recon its been done to mine as its harshly noisy sometimes
 
My advice: just change your standard air filter with a K&N filter, really makes a difference in noise above 3000 rpm and makes the engine run a little smoother. And if you really want it loud: get an Afe filter with heat shield and RPI airscoop... Will be great in combo with the quad exhaust conversion. The sound generator is actually more faking it, but the advantage is that your car reamins silent on the outside. But I want people to hear me coming :-)

Agree its a cabin noise only but this is a free mod that doesn't require you to inform your insurance company.

Chaning an air filter must be declared? It does not add any bhp anyway, it just makes your engine breathe a little better. Taking into account the changes Jon is planning, he'll probably have to inform the insurance company anyway ;-)
 
All the sound generator does is provide a route for the sound from the intake to travel into the driver compartment to make it sound more like a sports car (it's just a 3/5 series engine after all), it won't affect power at all. I took the large foam bit out of mine and prefer it as under normal driving it's the same so you're not deafened, you just get a loud howl on harder acceleration which does sound good and you just refit it if needed, it's a 2 minute job and surprisingly there is nothing to cut your fingers on in that area.
 
That's not all it does though, otherwise you'd just have a straight pipe from the intake to the firewall.
 
The sound generator is acoustically tuned, which is why the whole unit is huge and a weird shape and not straight. Moving this tuned sound from the intake system to the cabin is actually all it does. There is a membrane that prevents air escaping the intake system, so any changes to foam etc. do not change the performance of the engine, and nor does the presence of the sound generator itself.
 
Mine's already had this done, wish the old owner had given me the foam so I could experiment with different sizes!

Nice information about the filter though, I haven't heard that be recommended before on here.

yeah i think mine has too. it does make a great sound but sometimes its just too annoying. at certain revs i find it comes in very loud and now i find myself pulling off the trhottle to avoid making it.

for me its makes a noise that resonates in my ears too much. its not uncomfortable just anoying. i gues it stops me flooring it all the time so cant be too bad.
