Has anybody had a full diagnostic done after their remap?

Mine has a permanent fault code logged about ECU tampering detected. Impossible to clear it. To be clear though, this does not show up on EOBD alone, it only shows on vehicle specific scans on advanced equipment.

Does it show up as a code in the DME or from another module like the CAS?

R.E92, it shows up in the DME.

That's a fault with the ECU tune then. It can be turned off in the tune.

It won't cause any problems though and if you have an ECU tune on the car you won't want to go near a dealership anyway as it's possible the tune would get overwritten.

Can't say for sure. Seems a waste paying for another tune to be applied just to remove the catalyst codes, don't Celtic offer some sort of reduced rate for that work? After all it just involves the changing of 1 byte in the code and you've already paid them once
Celtic want £150 but for £300 I can have a rolling road and remap

That's fair. The rolling road is a gimmick, not sure I'd pay £150 for one. Money would be better spent on something like Dragy that gives you a much more accurate performance metric.

They’ve removed the inlet manifold and with much discussion declared it’s a waste of time n money doing a full clean...there’s hardly any crap in there..so a bit of a mechanical clean with a wire brush , quick dyno run to see how she has settled down and then back home ..

That's very interesting, and encouraging for other owners, that yours is so clean.
What mileage are you on out of interest?
I would assume you'll be citing quality fuel as the main reason? Or is the N20 not renowned for having issues?

I re-spoke to Mr Taciturn and his colleague Mr Quiet..strangely today I was embraced like a long lost friend..lots of chit chat, so I pumped em for as much info as I could get..given they do about 15-20 tunes a week I figured they might know a bit.. a peek in their scrap bin showed a few turbos/exhausts/discs/calipers/inter coolers so I guess they are quite hard core. They have a lab area with a few test meters, a nice scope, several soldering irons, test jigs and a variety of 'black boxes' with obd cables hanging of them..

So..to answer your question..

Essentially the N20 has a clever/good design on oil fumes managment..it doesn't end up throwing much oil mist/fumes into the inlet so it doesn't coke, in contrast to the N54 which is apparently notorious for it..

He did say that the B48 engine that followed the N20 doesn't seem as good in that respect and they've seen quite a few of those coked up at 30k/40k miles.

His general observation on this subject was that if it doesn't use any oil then its unlikley to coke up..

Pretty decent of them not to try and fleece me..I thought..

The good news is that the Yellow Peril's engine has adapted a bit to the re-map/fuel and made a few extra ponies even allowing for a very small change in environmental conditions..

Ah yes, that looks like it's crept up well on the hp. Yours did look low compared to the others on your chart, though masses of torque!!
And they reckon that is down to the car adjusting itself?
By my calculations, by Xmas it'll pass all the 'proper' 6-cyl cars at that rate of improvement. :poke: :D

Good news on the coking front too.

Considering you have further modded it with the decat, I'd spend the extra and have a new proper remap done. You've effectively gone from stage 1 to stage 2 and for the sake of an extra £150 you might as well maximize your car's potential.

I am just concerned now that the tuners may have problems deleting the sensors and overwriting the original Celtic map as what seems to have happened to Pbondar’s car

Most tuners are usually able to restore the factory settings etc. They usually offer a service to put your car back to factory if you don't like the remap or are selling it as a standard vehicle etc. Hopefully they'll be able to do what the Performance Centre did for PBondar. Might be worth discussing it with your chosen mapper to see what they say.

Mack, going to call PTorque tomorrow and speak to Will and hopefully get an appointment next week for a rolling road and map. They are only 40 mins away. I am worried to drive my car at the moment just in case I cause any damage. To summarise I have a Celtic map done Sept 19 and have recently had a decat fitted so need the sensors mapping out.

Providing you don’t thrash the b@ll@cks of it it will be A OK..

Chill :tumbleweed:

A bit of a wait for the dyno and tune, Ptorque got me booked in for 30th Sept as they are very busy. They also told me they are getting a number of N20 Z4s coming in now.

biZ4rreMids, are you the one having the Supersprint exhaust and decat fitted by Ptorque as well as the map? Will at Ptorque was telling me a few Z4 s now coming in for mapping and he said one was also having a full decat done

Hi Boltz, Will is fitting the Supersprint decat pipe, not the full exhaust system. He’s also installing a Wagner intercooler. The plan is to dyno run stock, with the hardware fitted and finally after the remap.

Ooh that'll sound good! Ride of the Valkyries blasting out as you come down the road.
Very Apocalypse Now. I love the sound of a Z4 in the morning :D

Please make sure you get some decent copies of the dyno runs boys and don’t spill water or coffee on the printouts..

In each case it would be helpful to know..

Year / month of car production
Decat and/or options
Mileage
Any fresh plugs n coils etc

I will get some nice clean copies, the before dyno should be interesting as it will show what the Celtic map currently on my car is doing.

Will do Pbondar, it’s the least I can do after reading some of yours and others informative posts on the n20 engine and tuning.

Afternoon All
Have been watching this thread with interest
I have a 2014 28i just clicked over 40k
Had a stage 1 map done in March with a k&n panel filter and gfb diverter valve
Standard the car pulled 233whp and once mapped 274whp
Have since had a full decat supersprint fitted and mapped again now producing 292whp
All work carried out by ARM BMW and Motorsports in Cornwall
No plugs or coil change since last service at main dealer. Graphs below and obligatory picture20200917_112213.jpg

Hello thnx..its crank BHP not WHP but all noted !

Is your's manual or auto pls?

Hi Pbonder asked this question to the tuner ie stating fly and he confirmed that its whp not crank. 233bhp at the wheels is consistant with other 28i's on the Web as we know bmw under rates there engines
