Rattling Noise From Rear Underside

Hi all

I recently had my MOT done on my 2005 plate Z4 and ended up with a bill of over £600 as I had to have replacement front brake disks and pads, tracking re-done, coil springs and a shock absorber. Since having this work done I have noticed a rattling noise coming from the underneath of the car at the rear, mainly when I am driving on a bumpy road it is most noticeable.

The garage have advised that I still have some things that need to be done which are: nearside front shock absorber has a light misting of oil, off-side front brake pipe slightly corroded, both rear brake pads wearing thin and front exhaust bolts corroded.

Taking into account the work that still needs to be done, is any of this likely to cause the symptoms of rattling?

Also, anyone in the know, I am being asked to pay around the £450.00 mark for the work that needs to be done, does that seem reasonable?

I couldn't afford to have it all done at once as it was over the £1K mark, so I am hoping it's safe to drive for the next few days or so?

The most infuriating rattles known to man (or, indeed woman, or any of the 40 or so transgender categories now acknowledged by Facebook) tend to be loose heatshields, which either need tearing off or doing back up nicely. If not a heatshield, some types of anti roll bar links can cause that kind of rattle on unsettled surfaces, or loose body trims perhaps. It could be a suspension mounting gone, given the outstanding work on the car it's entirely possible but check the cheap stuff first. For your own peace of mind I'd suggest an inspection to your own satisfaction of things like the security of brake components and wheels.

For god's sake make sure you don't have, e.g. a massive pink cake tin loose in the boot cos that would make you look a prize pillock after you think to check the boot having spent 10 minutes under the car looking for all of the above.

Ok so I took the car to two garages last weekend and both could find nothing visible when the car was taken up on the ramp. The second garage suggested that the problem might be with the prop shaft (whatever that is), but he said it would mean him stripping away a lot of the underneath of the car to get to this. Does anyone know if this is a thing I should be very worried about, does it need fixing ASAP and how 'big of a job is it, will I need to re-mortgage :o
