rattling noise from engine (pic added)

I have noticed a weird rattling/squeeking noise coming from a small box that is attached to the engine. It is mainly present at low revs (maybe because otherwise overpowered by engine noise)

I have a picture attached with the yellow arrow indicating the box where the noise is coming from. First question, what is it for, and second question: is it supposed to rattle?

I think it's called the DISA and they're not supposed to rattle.
Seems to be a common problem, though mine seems ok at the moment. There are plenty of threads on here about the problem, and some that show how to dismantle and check it for play.

yep thAts your disa valve and no it's not supposed to rattle, remove the three T30 (possibly T40) torx bolts from it and unplug it. pull the body of it out in the direction of the N/S/F wheel, once out it's simply an air directing flap. if the hinges on it have play you will need a new one and it's better to find out this way than to end up with it disintegrating and dropping into the engine

hope this helps
