Rattling Glovebox Lid

I have an annoying rattle which, this morning on the way to work, I narrowed down to being the glovebox lid.
It stops if I open it and hold the lid tight.
I haven't had chance to investigate fully yet but thought I'd ask if anyone has an idea what it might be and what the fix is.
I couldn't find anything specific by searching.
Any help much appreciated.

Andy

Damper is attached and the lid drops slowly.
Andy yes, the glovebox is empty - is this significant?

I have my wallet with all the original BMW booklets in there
When I started reading your reply I thought there's no way my wallet would be heavy enough to make a difference but when I carried on reading I realised which wallet you meant!
I used to carry mine in there too but thought it was that which was causing the rattle so removed it yesterday.
As you can tell from my post today, it made no difference!

Has the damper come loose? When you open the glovebox does it drop quickly or slowly?

Mine's come loose. It refuses to stay connected to the lid, keeps popping off when I open the box :(

My glove box just started rattling - really loudly ... and like you, I opened it, and the rattle goes away if I place my hand on the lid whilst open. (Not so good for my driving skillz though).

Not sure what is causing it ... seems it might be the hydraulic type of fastener that holds the glovebox open??? Took it for another drive, and noise now seems to have gone ... for now ... back soon, no doubt.

Yes - it was NOT the hydraulic type of fastener that slides vertically up and down when you open the glovebox. NOR was it the metal key latch thingy ... Noise was driving me nuts.

It turned out to be the horizontal plastic swivels at the bottom that the box swivels open and closed upon ... it somehow got broken and started rattling. Replacing the glovebox is very expensive here in Oz (abut $600 just for parts ... though perhaps you can just get the swivel????) ... Anyway, I had the glove box swapped with my other Z4 coupe which is awaiting repair, and the problem has solved.
