rattley engine

My 3.0 has got a bit of a rattle, mainly when you blip the throttle, it gives a little rattle when returning to idle, also when you turn the ignition off.

it sounds just like a bit of heat sheild rattling or something. Ive had a look today and nothing is loose that I can see, the noise sounds like its coming from the main engine block

has anybody had anything similar or any ideas what it might be?

its a 2005 3.0 manual
 
Symptom of Vanos problems....

But could be due to a number of other things, which I don't know enough about :(

It was definatley worth a try. just read a bit more about it, some people have said the pin wears lose sometimes, so I will have to check that tomorrow as I only cleaned it, can it simply be un plugged whilst the car is idling? that would allow me to check if it is creating the noise?
 
Are you sure it's coming from the engine? The heat shield over the exhaust cats had come loose on mine and was rattling at specific rpms and their harmonics. Easy to fix if you have a lift.

its looking like it is Vanos issues!!!!
 
I had the same thing. Thinking it was the vanos or disa. But in fact is was the heat shield. It was loose, but I pulled it up as much as I could, which wasn't much, and voila, rattle gone.

The shield I am referring to, is to the left of the engine, if you're standing at the front, about half way down. Not the big heat shield running down the side of the engine. Five me a shout if you're not sure and I'll post a pic.
