When driving my z4 on bumpy road it feels like im in a tin can!

There is a large rattle from the passenger side, i think from the door!
My 3 series convertible was slid and quiet, are z4 s just like this?

thanks

Mine was the same. Loads of threads about it on here. Lots of problems with noise from roll over bars. The plastic covers rattle like hell. I just worked my way thru fixing the problems till i was happy with the outcome.

LOL, I know what you mean. i came from a TVR that didn't rattle or clonk roof panels on or off and expected better from BMW. I have some noises around the passenger door/seat area to investigate. I think the seat noise goes away when there is a passenger in the car.

Oh I've just remembered, the large rattle near the passenger door is probably the seatbelt buckle knocking against the seatback - you need to find the right angle for the seat back so that it hangs away from the hard plastic - solved that one after a few months

Yeah, the Z4 is a pig when it come to rattles. Ive been in better made Vauxhalls over bumpy roads. Good thing in every other respect that they are pretty damn cool!

Oh yes, rattles, and different ones for different temperatures. Its one of the worst made cars I've owned, but I still love the old gal to bits! I had a fiat that broke and rattled less! But on a sunny day, top down, foot to the floor, that straight six roars and I smile ear to ear... ah whats a rattle or ten, turn up the radio, its a lovely day! ;)

The problem is even worse with M suspension and runflats. If you've got both of those then the thing sounds like it's trying to shake itself apart when you go down a bumpy road.
The rattle you have on the passenger side by the door is almost certainly the seat belt buckle - you'll notice it goes away when you have a passenger... took me ages to work that one out

I'm going to try attacking my rattles with some Krytox:

I've heard good things, so fingers crossed! The main culprits are the roll over bars as mentioned, the hood catch, and every piece of plastic trim :headbang:

I am a master now at driving with my right hand on the steering wheel while i press and prod all the rattle areas with my left hand trying to find out the suspect piece of plastic. For some reason all the noises eminate from the passengers side.

It is the seatbelt buckle rattling againt the door frame. I attached a piece of black velcro tape, the soft loop side to the door frame where it hits and no more rattle.

I just plug the passenger seatbelt buckle across the seat and into the clasp (just as a passenger would) - solves the problem.

What I do need tips on though, is a rattle from the rear. It sounds very plastic-y and I reckon it's the shelf that seperates the roof space (when it's down) from the boot. Any suggestions for that one?

Also, the bits where cupholders are fitted (if you have them - I don't) rattle like buggery too!

That Krytox sounds interesting - where sells it?

If the seatbelt is buckled, won't that let the passenger airbag deploy in an accident? Or does there have to be enough weight in the seat to trigger that side?

The rattle from the roll over bars comes from the little plastic windows built into the bars... I solved this with a little lump of Blue Tack in the front of the windows in each corner ... I have disguised the Blue Tack with some black electricians tape... seems to have solved that rattle.

The Coffee Cup Holders also rattled until I forced a "worm" of Blue Tack into the joint on the very end of the dash... added a wee bit of black tape and that's gone too.

Just need to sort the Hood (Soft Top) rattle now... Suspect it is the movable floor.

I have that one too - for months it sounded like it was coming from the centre console (only noticed it with the roof up, wasn't noticeable with it down). Dis-assembled the centre console countless times. Only when I heard it with the roof down could I hear it right behind me. Bloody thing. Will try and for this weekend, probably with black or clear silicone.

I have turned up the knobs in the boot which raise the boot root a wee bit and this seems to have cut out most of the hood (soft top) rattles - I just rattles a bit when driving over a rough road now - I have stuck a little self adhesive clear plastic disc (The ones you get to stop your kitchen cupboard doors from slamming) over the "Roof Down" button to remind me to turn the knobs down again before I drop the roof and cause some damage (According to the drivers handbook)
