Rattles ... a solution

As I suppose my posts since December 2016 have shown, I like my E89 a lot. However, since then and in 50,000 miles, it's developed some rattles. Not many, you understand, but enough not to like. One in particular was the after-effect of a pothole so deep that it also broke the n/s/r barrel spring and others, too, are no doubt the products of the road mending policies of the People's Democratic Paradise of Leicester, in which I live.

I've searched the forum for solutions, driven down especially bumpy roads with the wife holding onto the wind deflector, emptied the car of everything not bolted down, tried all the combinations of all the windows up/down & half-up, gummi pflege-ed every item of rubber and some not, tightened every screw & bolt on the luggage cover, had the seats against/not against the bulkhead, placed folded towels strategically to apply pressure at key points to identify ... et cetera. I have even ... and I hesitate to say this, because I know some won't believe it ... reduced the tyre pressures. All to no avail.

Today, however, I drove away from my local BMW indy in my now rattle-free car for the price of an hour's labour to pay two men who knew what they were doing. I recommend it.

Did they sell you a new car? :P

I had a similar thing going on, had a 'creaking' noise, just behind me, sounded as if it came from the floor somewhere in the 'back' (as if). Every small bump in the road would make it go 'krrrr'.

annoying as hell.

Went to my BMW specialist who happens to be two streets away from me & they fixed it in a day.

They actually had one guy go in the back (yes, the trunk) while driving to pinpoint the culprit. It turned out to be a top rubber part on the suspension. Ordered the new part, replaced it & gone was the problem. I would never have found that.

I know our boots are not small, but they aren't exactly 1 body size. Did they have to find the smallest BMW tec to fit into the boot?

I was feeling very smug when I bought my e89 as it was completely rattle free, however now the cold weather has come I'm now not so smug, very much like my e85, fine all summer but as soon as the temps drop to single figure on with the rattles.. it has developed one in the passenger area that when you hit a bump has a sound like a dice being dropped into a plastic cup, buggered if I can track it down. I too have done the forum searches and fixes tightening up what I can and felt taping plastic panels all to no avail so far.
I guess this is an inevitable by product of living with a vert, hopefully when spring and summer roll around again it will be rattle free once more

I solved all my rattles in mine for under a fiver with a clever gadget I found online.
I'm just trying to find it and I'll post it up for you all. Should save a few quid.

Its not ideal in certain weathers but sometimes opening and closing the roof can get rid of noises for a bit.

This.... I did exactly this at the weekend after another rattle appeared from the depths of the boot space, roof down, roof up, rattle gone.

Actually not a small guy.. I'd say 180 cm, but young & not being fat helps ;-)

Wurth Gummi Pflege on all of the rubber seals, not just the roof.

As the rubber goes dry this helps a lot. More effective on squeaks than rattles though.
