Rattle

When ever i have my radio turned down, i can hear a small rattle which sounds like it is coming from the boot. To me, it sounds like it is the plastic tray attached to the roof of the boot. Has anyone ever experienced this and is there a DIY for it, thanks in advance

Tricky one to diagnose - have your tried one of those Rattlebuster CD's? I cant really think of any other way of doing it. I never used it on my Z4 but I had a 9-3 and it worked a treat on that once you get the hang of it.Rarely have any of my rattles been from where I initially thought they where....but that may be me!

try the usual things like emptying out everything from the car, clipping in the passenger seatbelt, make sure the tools are al wrapped up in the boot. There was a post about a window rattle a while back, maybe see if it does away if the windows are down.

"RattleBuster – Will Not: Pin-point “Road-Impact” induced rattles" - that rules that out for me then as i only hear it when i am driving over a rough surface

Whenever I had the music turned *up* I would get weird rattles in the car from (what seemed like) the boot area. Took me weeks to finally realise it was my sunglasses in the sunglasses holder.

I have had the same problem - except mine is a fairly big rattle. From new it was a "clunk" when I went over any small bumps. If you tap the plastic attached to the rear boot/hatch it will replicate the same clunking sound as the plastic hits the metal. I asked the stealer to put something between the plastic and metal - they used felt and it dampened the sound a little - but not enough. The next time it went in, the stealer removed the felt, did something to the latch, and was much worse. When I pointed this out they said they couldn't do any more. I went to another stealers to see if they could fix the problem. I assume that this one just took the plastic off, had a look and put it back on - but not very well - because it is now a loud rattle, much worse than ever before. I've had this now for 2 years and the stealer's are incompetent at fixing it.

It appears to be the plastic rattling against the metal hatch over rough roads; or banging against the metal when going over bumps. I think it needs something rubber in the gap between the plastic and metal. My plan is to do it myself. I just need to find the right material to shove into the gap.
