Rattle when roof down...ideas?

Morning all,

Aside from my cupholders creaking :x , when I have the roof down there is a squeaky rattle coming from where the roof stowes/storage compartment.

I've taken everything out of the storage compartments and have had a poke around the roof stowage area with the top up and can't locate any loose parts.

I'm going to put the roof down and have poke around but does anyone have any ideas where I should be looking, or what it could be (if anyone has had this problem before?)

Thanks, Chris.

probably the latch in the center of the roof rubbing on the piece of metal where it rest when it's down.

I removed mine...

You removed it? I'm considering doing the same. HOWEVER, when the roof is up, can hear a mad squeeking from the area where the latch fixes onto the roof sill. Its from that area. When i push the plastic black pane covering it hard into the roof it momentarily stops.

I don't know whether its the latch or something behind the plastic plate covering it.

Frustrated to say the least :x

I removed some of it at least. There is a coating on the metal bracket - mine had completely worn down to the bare metal so it was metal on metal. couldn't see the purpose of it and the facelift cars don't have this clip so I removed the bit that had worn away. I should still have the part I removed so I will try and get a piccie of it over the weekend

Roof up was and still is silent though...

it is almost definitely that stupid manual roof release button catch thingy on top of the storage compartment.
mine does it all the effing time. :headbang:

WD40 ftw

Yes that's what I think it is, something under that catch, SOOO annoying, but strange that it only squeaks when the roof is down... I'm going to investigate further tomorrow.

gannet: A pic of the bit you removed would be helpful if you do get a chance over the weekend :)

its the manual roof release, so when the roof is up, it is actually doing something (as in, you can press it and it will release the motor, allowing you to open the roof (ifaik).

when the roof's down, there's no pressure, so it vibrates... at an annoying-as-f**k frequency lol

its THIS bugger on mine:

i squirted a little WD40 into the seams between the various bits of plastic pictured above ( particularly the bit circled in red) using the thin red tube that comes with the tin. squeeks / rattles gone!!

pictures as promised (apologies for the VERY poor quality - camera battery was flat so had to use my phone):

Part I removed with visible wear mark...:

Part it rubbed against... again with wear marks...:

hope this helps :D

for some reason though the one left on looks worn in the same way it doesn't actually make a sound :?. Screws were too tight to remove when I tried

Sorry, been away for a few days but just seen these updates.

Thanks for the pics Gannet and for the diagram sk93, I'm going to investigate further this evening and see what I can do.

Those blasted wind deflector inserts between the roll bars creak as well which is almost as annoying. I don't know why BMW don't use soft/rubbery plastics like Audi do....ho hummm.

I too have this issue,

Its driving me mad, it just oscilates and squeaks all the time when the roof is down. :headbang: I had a look at various stages of putting the roof back up, and I could not figure out where it was originating from. There are no signs of wear on anything that I can see.

It does sound like its coming from behind the top flap in the rear centre console (Above the little storage box), but whats actually behind that flap?

All I know is, that I need to stop it, and fast!

I have the same problem, but I find the faster I go, and the louder I have the stereo......the less of a problem it is

i am a little bit confused as to how to get access to these bits...

HI Chaps

I have just had my roof motor replaced (under warrenty) on a 03 3.0, but also have still got this annoying squeek when roof is down. If i remove the catch as above, does this affect the locking of the roof when down??

I have tried wd40 and golf tee's ( to stop the rubbing) but this seems not to be working.

Any more idea's please??

cheers

I not noticed anything detrimental. remember also that the facelift cars don't have that catch...
