When I have the roof down there is a squeak coming from the top of the centre panel - if I hold this down it stops!

Anybody have any idea what this is and if it easy to fix

Help!!!

Hehe, it's a little quiet in here but I hope people will answer your post in good time... where abouts exactly is the squeek? Where are you holding down? Do you mean the section between the roll hoops that I believe the hard top clicks into?

Well, we've got to start somewhere - around 30 people have read my message on ZRoadster (which hasn't been deleted... yet!).

Its the top of the part where the rear glovebox opener is - right on top.

If you put your hand on the top and push down it stops!

Its more of a squeak than a rattle really!

I've heard of squeaks coming from the roll bars plastic trim but not the console... does it ever do it with the roof up, or only when it is down? I wondered if the roof is touching the roll bar when in the up position?

No only when the roof is down.

I remeber reading something on Z4um that a few people had the problem and there was a easy and quick fix but it went down before I could read it properly.

I'm sure when this place fills us someone will know.

Dont be tempted to WD40 it :D

Generally in BM's you will find felt covering panel contact edges just make sure this has not dropped off

Or sometimes a squeak is caused by a hirline crack in the plastic

Failng that an here is an old trick I used to use to shut up noisy panels in cars with high end ICE.

If it is easy enough to remove the panel, you can use a dab of clear silicone sealant on each of the contact points with other panels and the chassis, which will kill any squeaks and rattles dead. Just make sure you only use a tiny bit, and then leave it a few hours to cure before fitting the panel back.

It's from the manual release I believe.

THere is a fix for it.

I have the same on mine. The dealer fixed it under warranty last year but it's back again.

I have this too, always have done.

The DIY fix is to apply some felt covered tape to the piece of metal that the catch latches into. BMW solved this themselves be removing the latch completely... something I've considered doing but never got round to. GVfB is the expert on this... I'm sure he'll be along sooner or later!

My usual solution is to turn the music up.

Can anyone give me some more details and possibly pics of where I need the apply the affor-mentioned felt covered tape??

Thanks

Alex

First make sure the top latches in the stowed position. If you can lift it, it is not locked.

On the above pic, you also see the hooks. Make sure to grease these with some teflon spray.

If you top folds down this way, that might be the reason why it doesn't latch:

must be something like this, just push the fold:

Official service bulletin: http://www.bmwtis.net/tsb/bulletins/bulletin_graphic_temp/B540302g.htm

IF the top latches OK, then put some felt on the lock mechanism. You can see it clearly if you look through the rear window. ONLY ON PRE-FACELIFT models!!

THEN, remove the plastic cover for the manual top release (just above the center console) and put some felt in there or use some teflon spray.

PS: on the facelifted models, the lock is gone:

I was going to give my usual smart ass answere about driving with one hand and holding it with the other....but GV put an end to that 🤣

well.....that only leaves the feet left...could be interesting

I had this a while back and just ignored it and it has gone away. Guess the hook that was causing the squeak got worn down enough that it doesn't rub anymore. Of course, I can't hear much in the car anymore as fast as I drive and as loud as I am singing along to Jimmy Buffett.

P.S. HI ZEE! Long time no chat. You going to Homecoming??? We need a thread in here for homecoming. I'm gonna look around and if I don't find one I'm gonna create one.

All Z4's (including yours, Brit!) are manufactured in Spartanburg, South Carolina. Every year, they have a get together at the manufacturing plant and invite all Z4's to join in in the celebrations. I would go, but it's too far.

Perhaps when the Atlantic ocean freezes over you can drive your Zed to NA and visit the plant.

Sounds cool!!! Wish I could go... sounds like a right laugh!! :D

And a thread fro that sounds cool... I'll leave it up to you experts to create it, but we'll sticky it for you if you like!
