Rattle solution

Well, the rattle (previous thread) has turned out to be the near side rear 'barrel' suspension spring, which has broken a turn and a half from the bottom. The result of 66k miles and corrosion*. £76 ex VAT at my local BMW independent.

The local AD is having difficulty meeting demand for parts, so it'll be a day or two before it's fitted, but the car's drivable.

(*And perhaps another cause. )

Well at least you found the cause.
Do you mean the actual suspension coil spring? If so, not just changing one after that mileage are you.
I may be a bit 'old school' but I was taught to always change suspension components as a pair across the axle, unless the originals were almost new.

Our drivers side broke last year.
It sounded like a brick being bounced off the rear quarter.
I stopped the car and got out looking for a large dent.
I changed both and had to change the droplinks too as one snapped while putting the new spring in.

That's a good price, my drivers side rear one went last year (31k) and I got quoted £130 supply & £190 supply/fit from my local friendly BMW dealer
