Rattle in steering column

Hi, I recently purchased an EX-Demo Z4 and I noticed very quickly a very annoying rattle coming from the steering column area. The car rattles badly on about 98% of it's journeys. I took the car back to the dealership and went on a drive with the technician. This drive was one of the 2% of journeys where the car didn't rattle and no matter what road surface we drove over, the car would not rattle. But of course, as soon as I returned home, the rattle appeared. It appears to be worst when the engine is cold and lasts for about 40 minutes into the journey which makes me think it may be temperature related.
Has anyone else experienced anything similar as unfortunately I now feel I don't want to drive the car anymore.

Any advice/comments would be appreciated

hi there,

I had something similar on my zed and it turned out to be coming from the wincsreen pillar on the drivers side. It get it a couple of nudges and the rattle went

hope this helps

Try the ignition key, I had mine replaced as it was very loose and the key continually rattled in the lock.

You mean the 'A' pillar?
I've got a rattle from somewhere there too. Driving me bonkers!

Used to have that Gareth but it would just be one click not a continuous rattle, gone now though wonder if it was due to the cold weather.

Maybe you noticed it when cold cus you had the heater on which would heat up/expand the plastics slightly?

If its any comfort I had mine at 9k and been back to the dealer with no lrss than 5 rattles squeaks and buzzes, half of which I fixed myself

When you say rattle what type of rattle do you mean? Is it a "solid" rattle i.e. something suggestion metal on metal or a "flimsy" rattle i.e. thin plastic on plastic or small stone on something?

I am not sure if my distinction makes sense but I have what I would describe as a "flimsy" rattle that sounds like plastic/perspect coming from the steering wheel or the dials behind it. I cannot quite tell as I cannot get close enough to pin point it while keeping an eye on the road. I have pressed nearly every bit of plastic/casing etc I can see and none seam to stop it. It is driving me mad but, like yours, it seams to disappear on many journeys! Grrrh!

I had what seemed to be a rattle from the steering column on my 3 series. turned out that one of the tie rods in the steering had excessive play. Just had it replaced - no more rattle.

Rattles drive me mad in mine as well.... 4 in total now.... All very noticable, I don't think it's just me being picky...

A-pillar (mostly when roof down), centre cubby drop down lid (constant when closed), both sides of the roof, i think behind the base of it behind my right ear and also the passengers left ear (behind the little plastic cover that pops off if you thump it hard enough) (only when roof up)

Oh and a squeak from the rear suspension when I get in or out.

BMW service advisor quote: "we checked and attempted repair on all obvious rattles then road tested with a similar Z4 and they were comparable." BMW service advisor meaning: "In other words we didnt even bother looking as they all rattle like f**k." :headbang:

Thank god for the decent stereo!

Rear suspension squeak is likely because your handbrake is on....try it with it off and see if it makes the same sound.
