Rattle from N/S engine block.

Whilst investigating another problem under the bonnet today I noticed quite a rattle (tappety) sound coming from the passenger side of the block. Right about the location of where I think the DISA(?) is.



I am going to locate a recon kit for this when I have done a little more research but as I was check this I noticed this



Is this split pipe something to do with the Hot Film air mass sensor and could it be the smaller one of the three openings in number 5 in this diagram.



If so, is it a breather pipe as I'm quite concerned it goes into the block after the filter and all sorts of crap could have been pulled in there? Also could this be causing the rattle?

Man this car is costing me :?

You will want to take care of the DISA right away if there is any chance at all the rattle is coming from that. (You've correctly identified it) You can also get a rattle like sound from an intake leak, but it sounds like it's coming from a heavier part than a DISA rattle, which is not a massive part at all.

You've also identified the correct part with the split. Yes, crap can get sucked in through this opening. However, the split is in the lower portion where it fits onto the throttle body, the small side inlet is for the sound generator. You'll want to get this fixed really soon as well. The mass air flow sensor is only related to this in that the same air goes through both, there are intervening parts between the two.

Sorry about your continued problems, at least these two are fairly common issues that all of us will probably need to deal with at some point if we hold onto our cars for any time. The car gremlins have not picked on you alone for these problems.
 
I recently had a rattle from my DISA valve and ended up going to a company via Ebay who sold and Aluminium upgrade kit which was and easy DIY job. The company are on Barnsley Road, under Junc34 of the M1 and called i6 Automotive follow this link:

I went directly to them and got the kit for £40 and the difference is like chalk n cheese. Before I only ever noticed a difference with the Sport button pressed now its loads better more low down torque and without the Sport its rapid, with the Sport button its mental and thats my wife quoting.

Any issues let me know and much better than the £198 I was quoted by Sopers with discount for a brand new unit but with the same crap nylon setup
