Rattle from engine n20

Have a rattle from engine. Does it if hot or cold. Sounds like a diesel…

2012 28i auto, (n20). Done 59k km, and had regular oil changes/services.

I see lots of reports on this engine having issues with timing chain, but I’m not experiencing the whine those make when failing. Almost sounds like a failing clutch throw out bearing, but it’s an auto….

They can sound very clattery on tick over..the cam cover noise insulation doesn’t cover it so it makes more noise than the injectors etc..

If you take off the oil filler cap and peer in with a torch , if you are lucky and the cam system is failing you may see damage / plastic swarf..

Mileage is low and with freq oil changes seems unlikely to be the cam chain sub system..
