So I have noticed a rattle between 3k and 4k RPM when in gear. I am wondering if I have some heat shielding that has come loose or something else. Thoughts on where to look for loose nuts or if there is some else going on?

Check your header cover (a thin plate on the left side of the engine above headers). Its most likely snapped at the first bolt (at the top). Common on S54's and i had mine replace.

Will do and let you know if that is the issue

Thanks for the advice!

couldn't find anything...I will have the shop take a look when they are doing the inspection

yup i replaced mine with Titanium bolts after this happened.... Twice.

The vanos does tend to rattle a bit at the rpm your talking about (usually about 3,250 rpm on light throttle) and is quite normal,

what doesnt ratlle at some point or another in these cars - USA built, tells everything in my opinion
... but designed in Germany and a lot of the parts, including engine, came from Germany. Don't blame the factory, they just put everything that was given to them together. The Z is by far the rattliest of my BMW's, but IMHO that is only because of the fact that "saving weight" is a big design factor (and rightly so) in sports cars. Have you ever been in a Ferrari?
