Rather odd?

Well I'm now a couple of weeks into the whole Z4 experience, and jolly nice it is too. I thought the assembled multitude might be interested in a couple of my experiences with the new car.

The first thing I did was to take it to my mate who runs his own mechanics business ( Advt. AH Auto's and Sons, Slyfield Ind. Est. Guildford). He very kindly put it up on the lift and looked over it for me most carefully. He discovered that one of the runflats had been repaired, and advised me that this is not considered proper by the manufacturers. I informed the vendor, who agreed to replace it, and that was done this afternoon. Jolly good I say, but he refused to take any payment for his inspection. I shall have to send him a bottle of Scotch, or whatever he prefers.

The other thing is that the Aircon and rear heated windscreen appeared not to work. I initially thought, "Fuse." But the fusebox, once I got into it was free of any blown fuses. I had such difficulty in getting into the fusebox that I actually went to a local dealer (Baron's of Hindhead) where the service manager finally managed to get into it and show me round. In view of the malfunction I asked them to book it in. The warranty has until the middle of June, so I thought there was a good chance that the work would be cost free, but in any case the vendor agreed to reimburse me any expense.

Now this is the interesting part. I took it in today and the service department called after an hour or so to say that the car is in 'transport mode' which is why the things wouldn't work. "Wossat?" I said. It seems that the cars leave the factory with certain functions disabled electronically until they get their PDI. The car has done 8000 miles from new, and from the state of the brake discs when I got it had been standing for some time. The service book has been stamped by the supplying dealer at 8000 miles a month or so before I bought it. They charged £67.33 for doing the belated PDI. As my vendor has agreed to reimburse my cost I am fairly relaxed about it, but it seems a bit thick for a customer to be charged for work which should have been but was not done prior to delivery. Bit odd dontcher think? :o

Chris - all very odd. BUT did you check everything was working before you took delivery? It's always harder to get repairs done once you have driven away. As for runflats and repairs - have a look at the various manufacturers websites and they can be repaired depending o the location of the 'hole' and the use made of the tyre immediately after the puncture but good for you in getting a replacement.

Just had a Michelin PS2 ZP repaired with no problems. Depends on the size of the puncture and where it is. It's maintained pressure since repair. Drove a bit gingerly the first week or so, but no longer. This was a front tire.

Welcome :)

So, basically the original owner drove around for the past 8000 miles with no aircon or heated rear window? DOH

And as the others say, runflats can be repaired but it depends on the size/location of the hole, and also if the tyre was driven any significant distance with it flat (can damage the sidewall). Once repaired they're just as safe, apparently.

Welcome  That is a strange one good your not having to pay out and personaly i would have pushed for a new tyre i know they can be repaired but i am always nervous of repaired tyres rather replace as i prefer my life above ground.

Well folks mines done exactly the same, gone into transport mode. Had an issue starting a couple of weeks ago as I hadn't been out in the Z in the bad weather. Left it in the garage with the alarm on etc. so when I came to start it the battery was a bit low, hence a big voltage dip no heated rear screen and the aircon has stopped as well plus the fan seem only to work of settings 1 and 2. Everything else is fine, but its a trip to the stealer to get it fixed, It will only happen once though, next time its laid up for a few weeks the charger will go on once a week to keep things healthy.

PS Glad I found this thread, its been very useful as I can at least explain to the dealer whats happened and get a quick fix

Aaah! So it can happen when the ECU gets low voltage. That explains it. From the state of the brake discs (ver ver rusty) it had been standing for a long time. As you say, worth keeping a charger hooked up when it's standing for a while. :)

How long before this kicks in as i left my Z standing for 5 weeks and started first time no probs although my sticky steering prob started after this non use.

Mine was left for about 2 months over the christmas and newyear when we had all the snow, I have a general hack for commuting so its not that unusual to be left for a while. Spoke to the dealer today booked in for the 12th April to be reset.

My battery went flat twice a few months ago after not being used for a few weeks resulting in calling out BMW assist, neither time the car went into limp mode so I think it's hit or miss.

The battery was replaced and ever since I use a battery maintainer when not using for more than a couple of days.
