Rat Polo

I know there are strong opinions against the stanced scene from members on this forum, but this thread is just too good to not share

It's a long read and a summary of it is as follows:

The guy is from Germany and is fabricating a rat rod vw polo. He's literally gutted the whole car and rebuilt it completely.

Perfectly normal for some, but given his apparent lack of skills for this mammoth task, a few have questioned his safety and that of others around him.

Anyone care to discuss, after the long read?

seems like Rat rod build is an excuse for a s**t build, at least in this case ! what a let down for German engineering ...wooden lats and duck tape ??

After spending a fairly lengthy amount of time reading through all that, it seems pretty clear that the work quality on it is appalling. Gotta love the lads endeavour though, he doesn't care what anyone says  He seemed to think the only issue they had was his welding when it was so much more than that.

His other "project" the MK4 Golf is ghastly. So he will have his ghastly "daily" and then he will have his death trap Rat Polo. Some of the ideas he has are cool enough and I can appreciate the whole rat car look when it's done well, but he really needs someone with a bit of knowhow working on that project with him.

i dont know what to make of this guy as i can sort of see where he is coming from .... sort of.

i think if i was to attempt something like this then i would get it wrong, so he comments about im just giving it a go and its my first project etc are valid. tbf ive not read it all just the last 4 pages. at least hes having a go and sort of accepts its a s**t design etc. the flip side is he isnts taking any note of any comments that may help. its a difficult one to judge.

so if he finishes and it falls apart on the first bump so long as he injures no one then all is fine its his cash hes wasting and from the looks of the thread hes got somewhere... albeit a bag of shite.

i dont likee all the comments regarding the stickers etc its his car le him do what he likes.... our brad is doing the same really (but much much better)

i did like this comment as its so bad...

"...atrods and old skool hotrods aren“t safe and they are not built well ! " ,,That overengineered high quality stuff belongs to Streetrods, nothing else !"

,,REAL Ratrods or old skool hotrods are built like they look - horrible and bad"

a real rat rod will be built properly and look like a bag of shite. not built like one and is one!

i think it all points to some one who doesnt know what they are doing really and are out of their depth. but give him his due he stuck to it and made something. I think of it a bit like a kid building a go cart out of stuff and learning. maybe just a bit more dangerous .... glad hes not here

I read a lot more and I have to give him some respect too for his drive & enthusiasm, his welding also improved later on, but it was still obvious that he's not a fabricator..and a bit of a chancer, but that's how you learn.

Unfortunately he took some of the advice from people with more experience & knowledge than him as an insult and it got a bit nasty , "arrogance of youth" springs to mind..however who knows what he could be doing in ten years at least he is inspired :)

Just be careful what you say, in 10 years time he could be working for BMW, Audi or Porsche and designing/building your next car...

that made me chuckle!

One undoubtedly has to give the guy props for his build, but if I were in his position, I'd probably do it all and then have someone (read: experienced welder) do it all again so at least I know what I did and what it should be.

I do hope he finishes the car though. A lot of builds like these end up being sold or scrapped.
