Firstly, forgive me if this has all been done before. I haven't visited the forum in a while... but a couple of years back when I was a frequent visitor here, I kinda accepted that G29s were still a bit new and maybe a bit too expensive to see traded in a forum. But the model has been around for 6 years now and still I don't see any being sold here. It's a pity - I'm starting to think about moving on from my (much loved) E89 and I'd prefer to buy from another forum member who cares about their car and takes the time & trouble to join a forum of knowledgeable and enthusiastic owners. But none for sale. What gives? Back when I joined here, 3 year old E89s were changing hands so age alone surely can't be the issue.

I bought mine new without finance. Decided to go back to a Cayman after 10 months with the M40i. Put it up for sale on here and it probably would have sold to a well respected forum member if he hadn't committed to an order for a new M40i. No other interest in it on here so I sold it back to the supplying dealership who offered me the best price by far.

For most £25-30k is too much for cash, I did take a PCP but paid it off 3 months later when it suited me, no penalty. It’s a great car and we are putting too many miles on it, the B58 is beyond my DIY ability so I will keep a BMW extended warranty on it.

You'll see from the responses that quite a few of us have changed a G29 for another one. The recurring theme is BMW are meeting expectations with trade ins so no need to go to the market, I "might've" got another £1000 for mine but imo, wasn't worth the hassle or wait when I could drive in with one and drive out with the new one.
Saying all that I would have bought Boyo's but was past the point of no return with my order.
Re the PCP'd ones, it's part of the reason I've bought new. The spec available both times of me looking was very poor as they seem to be ordered with very poor spec to keep the payments down.

That can't be true. If BMW dealerships are dictating the selling prices of used G29s, which they seem to be, the private market MUST be worth more than a 'bag of sand' over dealer prices.Argyll Andy said:

I am sorry (and not getting at anyone personally, or in particular), but if you don't have outstanding finance/ PCP it is pure laziness why many PX their cars rather than sell them privately IMO. Which, to me, shows that the average person doesn't need the money.
There was a 2021 G series, 3-something convertible at my local WBAC 'portacabin' the other day. I really hope they didn't flog it to them just for ease, cos if they did they should get a pay cut!

When it was they gave me a new figure which was slightly less but 4 months had passed, then I got a call from the person who was dealing with the new car asking if I'd be willing to sell directly to BMW's used car buying manager as she'd mentioned my car coming in to them, so they bought my car directly. Gave me £1k more than my initial trade in offer, £2k more than my latest offer. There was no additional discount on a new one for no trade in. Before expenses there was a £3k mark up on my car when it was advertised @ £36k

When I was buying my first BMW in 2005 I advertised my Seat Leon Cupra and only got £500 more than the trade in offer after dealing with idiots and test pilots. The buyer tried to get it cheaper but I told him to jog on and he gave in.
Then 3 weeks later I got a London Congestion Charge notice. I didn't have to pay it but it all felt like hard work for minimal benefit. :roll:

The G29 (and others) are specialist cars that need a warranty on sale, provision for that along with minor refurbishing, valeting etc needs to be built into the retail price I would think £3000 mark up would be realistic, in addition they make money out of finance and extra insurances and warranties you may buy.
When was the last time you sold a £30K+, main stream car privately. At that price point potential buyers are usually looking for part ex and finance. You have to deal with the tyre kickers, low ballers and test pilots. Not too mention the possibility of fraud.Pondrew said:That can't be true. I have sold many many cars privately and can honestly say I have never had a problem with anyone. It's easy to forget that the vast majority of car buyers are genuine, honest, nice people IME.
I finally managed to convince my partner to get rid of her 1 year old Audi A1 a few months back. The dealer she bought it from offered more than Motorway etc, and likely just as much as a private sale would have achieved, looking at private asking prices (which aren't going to reached anyway) on Autotrader.
And we didn't need to worry about cleaning it or dealing with all the scratches around the drivers door handle. Or weeks/months of inconvenience and frustration dealing with idiots.
Just a no brainer, given the hassle and time required to sell privately, even if you are lucky enough to find a sensible buyer.

I have routinely bought privately even at relatively high values. I buy the car I think is the best in relation to the cash in my hand at the time. Sometimes the car has come from a main dealer, back street, or private. You take it as you see it. I don’t assume any better after sales with a dealer than private. Certainly not with a backstreet “3 month” guarantee which are routinely worthless. I would never chop anything in as PX unless the deal was better in terms of getting the most for mine and the least for theirs. Most private sales are a better experience than going to a dealer. With our types of car you are more likely to find a well clued up enthusiast rather than a t**t in a suit.
